Hello all,
I was waiting at Hackney Central this morning when I saw a train hiding in the bushes, before realising it was on the curve heading for the West Anglia line.
I don't think I've ever seen anything on that curve before. Any ideas what it might have been doing?
(I couldn't make out the class, only the London Overground orange doors.)
Cheers,
Simon.

Sounds like it was an empty stock transfer, which basically means moving trains not in service from one location to another. I can't think of any one a day trains that use that curve.

Realtimetrains shows the 0745 Richmond to Stratford service was terminated at Dalston Kingsland (was late running, arrived at Dalston at 08:49). The return service started back from Dalston at 09:07. Presumably it must have been held in the Graham Road curve for 15 minutes? Perhaps this is what you saw? I wonder how often the Graham Road curve gets used to turn back late running services.

Interesting - I wasn’t aware that the curve was used for that purpose!

Thanks guys,
That makes sense then - the timings match up perfectly, and it also explains why the train I got was late.
I've not seen the realtime trains site before - thanks for the link.
😊
Cheers,
Simon

It is used to turn trains during engineering works east of Dalston Kingsland, by late running trains or during other periods when it is necessary to turn back, and of course in leaf fall season by NR spraying trains to and from the West Anglia line.

It all boils down to what control want. If the train ticks all the boxes & Network Rail say yes then they will use it but it's rare as normally they turn us at Cannonbury or H&I

I recall travelling on this in the days when it carried Watford Junction trains that had been diverted from Broad Street to Liverpool Street.
Alas, these were often cancelled. Perhaps because BR wanted to kill this service and therefore things like a poor service which ran at somewhat inconvenient times was seen as the best way to drive passengers away so that they could then say that since hardly anyone uses the trains so there was no point running them!

the tracks on the curve, right up to the junction north of London Fields, still look pretty shiny?
