At about 17:35 this evening (Monday 21/05/2018) train 115 to Ealing Broadway came to a stop a short way into Mile End westbound platform, I would guess at the first block marker board within the platform. The whistle was sounded and we accelerated. The train braked hard but did not quite come to a complete stop before pulling the rest of the way in.The whistle was again sounded before departure. Does anybody have any idea whether anything interesting happened here?

Two possibilities, either an ATO failure after which the TOp switched into Restricted Manual to fully berth the train in the platform or a passenger was too close to the edge of the platform and the TOp activated the emergency brake.
I was going west around that time, somewhere around Holborn or thereabouts and Wood Lane didn't mention it.

If the train stopped, depending on how long before it pulled away again, could it also have been for the retrieval of something from the track?

S stocks won’t be in ATO at Mile End yet Nor are they ever likely to see service on the Central line* east of White City. *Note which forum this thread has been posted in.

If the train stopped, depending on how long before it pulled away again, could it also have been for the retrieval of something from the track? If something was being retrieved from the track the Line Controller would have radioed the train at Stratford (or before), the train would then have gone from Stratford to Mile End in Coded Manual and there would have been no need to sound the whistle. The driver should also have made a PA to tell the passengers why they were stopping a short way into the platform, otherwise they might get worried when the doors didn't open and start pulling handles down.

If something was being retrieved from the track the Line Controller would have radioed the train at Stratford (or before), .............. This assumes the line controller knew about it before the driver. Maybe the driver spotted something as he came into the station.

That would be someone trespassing on the track rather than station staff following the procedure for retrieving an item which are two completely different things. In the former the TOp would have sounded the whistle while applying the emergency brake which is not as tut described it.

Also sounds like an overspeed trip as the brakes came on.
