Hi first time in posting so if it’s in the wrong area, apologies
Visiting London in August and want to make sure I get the best out of a short visit. Using the underground is obviously the best way to get around.
We are a family of four staying in Watford. Now I’ve looked and we are zone 8 but non of the family tickets include zone 8. Only as far as zone 6. Am I missing something?
What is the best option for me?
Thanks

Welcome.
You mention Zone 8, which probably means Watford High St or Bushey. If you can reach Watford Metropolitan station (Cassiobury) Zone 7, the service is good and goes to Baker St, more convenient than Euston, for the West End.
For ticket details, see the TFL children's ticket website.
If either adult has a railcard, you could consider buying linked Oyster cards, which give discounts for non-peak hours travel. They can be set up at the Underground station (but I'm not sure about Watford HS or Bushey). Otherwise you could use Contactless bank cards.
Have fun!

Thanks for the reply You are correct we are staying in Watford. Therefore getting to zone 7 shouldn’t be a problem. Now we haven’t got a railcard between us. Also we would only be travelling one day on underground for a family of 4 (2 children 16,13) Wondering if I’m just being thick but I can’t find any type of family day pass. Is this available?

Watford (Met) station is some distance from Watford itself. I'd certainly recommend looking up the distances from where you are staying on a map rather thank make an assumption - if you're going to start using buses then it you'll quickly negate any cost savings. Unfortunately child fares are only for those under 16, so you'll need to purchase three adult tickets and one child ticket. There are no family tickets. If you are only travelling into London on one day (which is what I understand) then you should keep this as simple as possible, irrespective of where you are travelling from. If you don't have any railcards then your best option is going to be to use a combination of Oyster cards and Contactless debit or credit cards. As previously mentioned, for the 13 year old get a new, normal Oyster and arrange for a 'Young Visitor' discount to be loaded onto it. This will cause the Oyster to charge (and cap) at half fare, though the usual £5 deposit is required. For the adults, just use Contactless cards if you have them, which will give the cheapest travel and cap accordingly. If you don't have enough (you must have one per person) then you can procure additional 'normal' Oyster cards and use those. Any unused PAYG credit, plus the £5 deposit, can be refunded after 48 hours, or retained for future visits. Without knowing the exact zones you wish to use, and what your journeys will be, it is hard to advise on how much PAYG would be needed, but £15 would be a good estimate if you are travelling solely off peak.

So I think I’m setting for a £12:50 off peak travel card for us. (Zone 1-9)
Are there child prices for this? 16 and 13 year olds?

So I think I’m setting for a £12:50 off peak travel card for us. (Zone 1-9) Are there child prices for this? 16 and 13 year olds? This privately run website is very very good on fares matters. The page I've linked to has the full price range for one day tickets as well as caps. There is loads of other info on the site. www.oyster-rail.org.uk/fares-guide/daily-caps-and-travelcards-2018/If your preference is to use One Day Travelcards then yes it is £12.50 for Adults and the 16 year old. You would need a Zip Photocard for the 16 year old to give access to discounted fares and lower daily caps. UK residents can apply for a Zip Oystercard - TfL recommend applying at least 1 week in advance. I believe there is a cost for applying for the pass which may or may not be worthwhile for you. tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/travel-for-under-18s The 13 year old can use a Z1-9 One Day Off Peak Travelcard priced at £1.50.

The 13 year old can use a Z1-9 One Day Off Peak Travelcard priced at £1.50. £12.50 is actually the off-peak daily cap for Oyster users, a One Day Travelcard is £13.50 off peak for Z1-9. Where are you getting the £1.50 child fare from? - that's an amazing deal if it exists!

Where are you getting the £1.50 child fare from? - that's an amazing deal if it exists! Sincere apologies to you and the OP. I was looking in the table of daily caps not travelcard prices. (where's my dunce's cap?) It is £6.70 for a Z19 11-15 years of age one day off peak travelcard. As you rightly point out the adult price is £13.50. The £1.50 is the daily off peak cap for 11-15 year olds for Z19. The price differential is probably large enough to warrant paying the fee for the Zip Photocard if you're staying in London for a few days.
