I don't think today's question will be the hardest of the quiz, but I do think it will be a little more difficult than yesterday's question. (click the image for the full size version - 882KB)

The idea of the quiz is primarily to name the station (or other location if not on a station). To add a bit more interest you can also name where on the station the photo is - e.g. yesterday's photo was on the westbound platform of the station.

Initial response was is it Ongar or another station beyond Epping, but IIRC they are all single platform, which leaves me trying to think of stations with abandoned entrance routes...

Would that be the sign on the access gate to the LU building (on top of the bridge by platform 5) at Upminster perchance It could well be, if the crucial "4 & 5" has been electronically deleted.

It might be, but I don't think the Upminster traincrew depot and signal box buildings are painted blue.
The really clever amongst us will count the tail feathers of the arrow and tell us exactly how old the sign is - for some reason I want to stay that double-tailed arrows are 1930s early LPTB, which would discard Upminster from the running (if it were true).

Answer:Well done, this sign is at the end of the bridge at the eastern end of Upminster, although I will defer to the expert knowledge of others about the use for the building behind. The words "4 & 5" were removed from the sign electronically, indeed I was rather pleased about how un-obvious the removal is on this image. For those interested, the unmodified picture is here (sorry, large version only). Chris

Hi Suncloud,
With the benefit of Chris M's answer above, I was intrigued re your suggestion about the furthest Eastern extension of the Central. As far as I recollect, Buckhurst Hill had its Westbound ticket office and entrance permanently discontinued around the late 1980's. This arrangement resulted from electrification causing rebuilding of former level crossings after the New Works electrifications, and rearranging of roads and passenger entrances.
It would IIRC have resulted in being the furthest Eastbound Central Station such a sign as the Quiz could have referred to. There were subsequent and substantial road rebuildings at South Woodford Station.
Whilst this comment is not strictly "on thread" for which I apologise, I hope if you or anyone else is interested in discussing further, starting a new thread on the "Historical" topic might be relevant to chat further?
cheers,
