This afternoon I caught an eastbound District line train from Kew Gardens. Shortly before it arrived the automated announcement was made, in the National Rail format, that "the next train is a London Underground service to Upminster, calling at Gunnersbury and Upminster". In reality it actually stopped at every station to at least Westminster (where I alighted). I presume the reason is that the National Rail database of stations doesn't know about all the intermediate LU-only stations (although it does seem to know about Turnham Green), but there really ought to be an alternative that doesn't involve misleading people about where a train will (not) call.

It should have mentioned Barking as well then! That's an NR station I think. Not a whole lot more helpful though.

Possibly teething problems? I've used Kew Gardens countless times, and I've never heard an announcement, so unless they are peak morning hours only, I'd guess this is a new system.

This was early/mid afternoon on Thursday, so extremely unlikely to be peak hours only but it's not a station I use regularly at all.

Shame that it isn't a continuance from Richmond which announces District services (most of the time) as:
Platform X for the London Underground service to Upminster, Calling at District line stations to Upminster via Earls Court.

Reminder that Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury are LU stations. The announcement I heard was definitely a National Rail one in terms of formatting and I think voice.

Last time I was there the platform displays were showing the scheduled time for the District line trains as well as the Overground trains.

I think that only a partial list of stations is also quoted on southbound Bakerloo line trains between Harrow & Wealdstone and Kensal Green - its a while since I was waiting on an appropriate platform to hear the message.

Last time I was there the platform displays were showing the scheduled time for the District line trains as well as the Overground trains. It announced the correct time, destination and operator for the District line service I caught. I arrived on the platform as the preceding LO train was departing so I don't know how that was announced. I wasn't able to see the DMI from where I was sitting.

Apologies to all, I had thought these stations along with the Watford line stations (except Willesden Junction) had transferred to LU, I misconstrued.

The management of the stations may have changed, but I understand the track and signalling is still NR's. There is precedent on the Wimbledon line, where the line itself is now owned by LUL, but still uses NR signalling.

There is precedent on the Wimbledon line, where the line itself is now owned by LUL, but still uses NR signalling. There was an oddity at East Putney whereby although the only trains that stopped there in passenger service were LU, it was an NR station, so you would see people smoking as underground trains pulled in which was odd. Presumably the same situation obtained at a few stations but was East Putney the only one where there was NO NR passenger activity?

was East Putney the only one where there was NO NR passenger activity? Southfields and Wimbledon Park were also BR stations with only LU services.

I remember hearing this myself a few weeks back. Can’t remember what time of day it was though. I too though it a bit strange that it didn’t include the ‘and all stations to Upminster’ that (I think!?) I’ve heard before at Richmond. I naturally assumed that it would of course not run non-stop through to Upminster, but think it could confuse/worry first-timers and those unfamiliar with the system. I presume the reason is that the National Rail database of stations doesn't know about all the intermediate LU-only stations (although it does seem to know about Turnham Green), but there really ought to be an alternative that doesn't involve misleading people about where a train will (not) call. Interestingly the icon used on Google Maps for Turnham Green is one of National Rail and not LU. Is there a history to this station...?

Interestingly the icon used on Google Maps for Turnham Green is one of National Rail and not LU. Is there a history to this station...? The line through Turnham Green was owned by British Railways and its predecessors until 1950. Turnham Green was not originally part of the Underground, but, (like all the stations from Ravenscourt Park to Kew Gardens) was built as part of the London & South Western Railway's Hammersmith loop line from Addison Road (now Olympia) to Richmond which opened in 1869 (Ravenscourt Park opened a few years after the line was built). Connections with the Hammersmith & City Line and District Line opened in 1870 and 1877 respectively. The Midland and Great Western Railways also had running powers over this section, but by the end of World War 1 the District was the only passenger service left - the LSWR section between Adison Road and Ravenscourt Park being closed shortly afterwards. However, it was not until 1950 that ownership of the line between Ravenscourt Park and Turnham Green was formally transferred from British Railways to London Transport.

Same happens southbound on Bakerloo NR stations heading for Queen's Park, it lists all the stations individually to Queen's Park, then just tacks Elephant & Castle on the end, making no mention of any stations in between.
