What are the brackets for and why the anomaly of only one platform? Something to do with routing of trains perhaps?

In the image attached is as oddity that I think I know the answer to but do YOU? You will see on the London bound platform several posts. Some with lamps and some without. On these posts are some metal brackets in the form of a squashwd 'D'. There are none on the Uxbridge platform. What are the brackets for and why the anomaly of only one platform? BTW evidence of frequent steam train passage can be seen on the bridge The brackets carried the two bare copper wires which operated the S sign near the starter which told the driver to start the train. The wires were connected by the brass tip of the guards green flag. He touched the wires and this lit up the sign. They were located on both platforms but they were only required at the rear of trains so they were only positioned for 4-car to 8-car operation. There were at the other end of the WB platform. I think an old S sign still exists at Baker St Platforms 3/4 down end, below the starter. There were some places where the wires were a long way from the train and you had to dash back before the driver took off and left you behind. Preston Rd and Rickmansworth were two I remember. The steam stains were because almost all of the ballast trains were steam worked in those days.
