Are these the only air operated points on the Central line? Why were they not converted to electric when the line was upgraded?

There are air-worked points on the Central line at Queensway, Marble Arch, Liverpool St and Bethnal Green. Until fairly recently there was also Holborn. When the line was resignalled, M63 electric point machines were installed in the outside sections, but there's no room for them in the tunnel section. In the last few years a new electric machine, the Surelock, has been designed to be used in the tunnel sections.

Not all outside points were M63’s where you had 4ft EP points the air motor was replaced with one that worked with hydraulics. This was not done down the tunnel areas as hydraulic oil is flammable and poses a greater risk.

Surelock was not designed as a bespoke tunnel machine it’s just a newer version of the M63 which uses all the same circuitry and ground connections .
We have them in outside locations and tunnel areas and they work once set up correctly quite well even though a few issues have arisen since there introduction onto LU well the Northern line had them first and suffered from some catastrophic failures.

Indeed, I remember Edgware was horrendously unreliable at one point - it was a standing joke that they failed if the weather was too hot, too cold, too wet or too windy. To be fair they're fine nowadays.

I must have been dreaming then! I was sure that the EH was tried in "the hole" somewhere. I do recall the Surelock conversion vaguely

Don’t remember the central having clamplocks at all There were a few - WER and some of the sites in the east which had early M63 replacements

I would hazard a guess at West Ruislip Makes sense! I was trying to find somewhere at the east end of the line! Then he would have said "and some other sites...." rather than "and some of the sites......"

I would hazard a guess at West Ruislip Makes sense! I was trying to find somewhere at the east end of the line! As I understand it, the rule when it comes to Central Line station abbreviations is the first 3 letters if the station name is a single word (eg HAI = Hainult), and then if 2 words long, the first 2 letters are the first 2 of the first word, and the last letter is the first letter of the second word (eg SHB = Shepards Bush). I think that for the 3 word stations, they just use the first letter of each word (eg TCR = Tottenham Court Road)
