Before connect/train radio there was a system called DRICO (Driver to Controller communication). The lines that had it and I think it was all lines except the Victoria. Test's were carried out by the driver's on specific days and times, what I am after is where on each line were these test's carried out.
TIA

I have a vague recollection of doing a test after entering the tunnel at Newbury Park. This was done by Hainault crews. I’m sure there were other locations maybe booked from other depots, but that’s about it for my memory.

Working Timetables gave the locations where extra time was allowed for DRICO Tests to be undertaken.
Just remembered i had District Line Set Working Book No.8 from 1979 to hand: code: extra time allowed for DRICO test between: YB Mile End and Bow Road YE West Kensington and Earl's Court YW West Brompton and Fulham Broadway

We had a job at PG where the driver would test the drico between West Brompton and Fulham Broadway, usually a late evening run on the w/b.

What did testing the DRICO actually involve, to justify the extra time in the schedules? Would the train be stopped in section to allow this to take place?

To test DRICO in the depot you simply clipped the wires of your train to the wires of the one next door the you & another fitter could talk to each other.

What did testing the DRICO actually involve, to justify the extra time in the schedules? Would the train be stopped in section to allow this to take place? Yes indeed the train would need to be stopped, fully secured (brakes etc.) - open cab cabinet - open cab door on side nearest to wires - unravel two long twisted wires (similar cloth covered wire on domestic telephones) with metal clips attached - clip onto tunnel telephone wires (didn’t matter which way round) - speak into cab annunciator (or dedicated handset as provided on D and 1983 Stock) - usually with load “hullo! hullo! hullo! DRICO test train xxx to Controller” - wait for Controller reply - confirm with Controller test successful - usually finished with Controller saying: “off clips Driver!” - remove clips, rewind wire and store in cab cabinet.

Weren't these wires also used to discharge the traction current? Or was that a separate set?

What would you be required to do if there was no reply? just reset everything and report at next station. Weren't these wires also used to discharge the traction current? Or was that a separate set? Yes, it was the same wires (now decommissioned), using the different equipment, DRICO or tunnel telephone handset would give alternative results. DRICO was primarily for an information source, tunnel telephone handset was for emergency use.

Yes, using the emergency handset which the motorman carried in a wooden box would cut off the traction current.
