I have always wondered, Engineering trains can consist of a few different types of wagon, and be of differing lengths. Do the drivers form their own trains before they do out to a job, or are they formed by shunters at the depot?

They're formed by shunters against a booking request - the track renewals jobs often have an A3 sheet of details of the consist of every train.

The engineering trains would be marshalled together and prepped (including brake test) by the marshalling link of Transplant Drivers. When the Drivers booked to work the train to site book on, they will do their own prep/brake test on the ready formed train and then be on their way
