While looking at aerial photographs of London last night, I came across this picture of Kennington station. Having seen numerous plans of it, this one did not look right and it took me a few moments to work out the details. Anyone like to make some observations as to why, when or what? Looks like there arre some metal containers, so must have been during the modernisation when the entire Bank Branch was closed a few years back... [2001]

[2001] I think that they are portacabins inside a closed section of the carriageway. It looks like the refurbishment work on the dome has been completed, but there is definitely no scaffolding around it. The previous dome, which was a 1980s replacement, had a horrible stainless steel-type shiny finish that looked wrong. The current refurb is far better. It is however a pity that they did not replace the weather vane. Having said this, I must admit that I am not 100% certain - the quality of the picture is not good enough and the finish of the dome could just be a trick of the light. If the photo precedes the latest dome refurbishment, I agree with c2001. If it is post-dome refurbishment it will be more recent. Does anyone else have any ideas or know the dates that these images were taken?

I've just searched over the NR network for clues. I'm drawn to the fact that in the image, there is no 'Flying Junction' at Shortlands. The flat junction was rebuilt with a flying junction in 2003/4. I'd say that the image for Kennington is at least 5 years old.

Those buildings were portacabins in the road. The station was being refirbished at the time with new ops room, tiling etc being fitted.
Kennington has to be my favourite station as it has such character, but was a fabulous place to work too. I miss the station and the people I worked with, but I dont miss being an SA.
