To be fair to them, Germany has always had a happy knack of using long, convoluted words to describe in full detail what the phrase or word actually entails, so rather than use a 3-word description of whom to contact when the central heating's on the blink, there is just one word in German: ZentralheizungsingenieurI'll leave you to decide whether theblackferret is more descriptive than dasschwarzeFrettchen, but I think you'll struggle to find anywhere amongst our place names that beats GELSENKIRCHEN!! as a possible declaration of war rather than a city!! |

The word terminal has remained the same as well! Meanwhile, "Ken's Hof" sounds like a possession and "Elefant & Burg" sounds a bit like a corner shop IMO. It's also nice to see the ELL - no, OLL - translated too.

Arsenal: The OED tells us that the original is from the Arabic dar al-sina a meaning a workshop or factory. The modern English meaning seems to come from French, Spanish and Portuguese origins.

[/p][/quote] The King George V branch of the DLR opened in December 2005, but is shown here as under construction. The Jubilee line is fully open, so it must post-date December 1999. The October 2003 poster map looks pretty similar, as does this one from Spetember 2004. |

A map similar to this was discussed not long after I joined this forum.
I say similar because the one thing I remember about that version (which doesn't appear in this one) was Mile End becoming 1.6km Ende.
