Interesting findings from an FOI
Grace periods for the following: 1) Touching in after the start of the AM peak? Peak starts at 06.35. 2) Touching in before the end of the AM peak? Off-peak starts at 09.27. 3) Touching in after the start of the PM peak? Peak starts at 16.05. 4) Touching in before the end of the PM peak? Off-peak starts at 18.57. It also states, "Please note that the grace times quoted above apply for both Oyster and Contactless. The quoted times are as set at the particular validation devices and these may sometimes vary from true time; the grace times are therefore not guaranteed to apply from the perception of the user." So, the peaks are 16 minutes shorter than advertised, who knew?

According to Diamond Geezer ( blog post) there's also a similar thing with the Hopper fares... Makes perfect sense to me though.

Indeed, there are several time critical rail services that just skim under 09:30 with the extra leeway and likewise for 16:00 it's certainly a useful feature utilized to negate the need for admin costs dealing with mischarged fares on the precise times advertised.

An easier solution is probably to display the Time on a Gate or Touch In/Out machine. The New Crossrail Ticket machines at Abbey Wood do display the time at the top right hand corner - if this prototype experiment by TFL is successful, perhaps it could be rolled out to all gatelines in the future.
