This afternoon I had to take a trip to Stratford and because I wasn't in a rush I took the 'scenic' route from Upton Park - Mile End then back to Stratford on the Central Line On arrival to the Eastbound Central Platform, I noticed that a women had dropped a personal item on the track, the SS was called and he picked the item up with a litter picker. Whilst on the subject, a few months back I remember (also being at Mile End) waiting for an Eastbound District, a group of young chavs (the type that you just want to get hold of and punch their lights out) were skateboarding along the Platform, unfortunately one of them 'dropped' their Skateboard down the EB District Track, luckily no Trains were present both roads and the Skateboard had not of landed in a location where it would of been a danger to Trains if one happened to be present, for about a minute they started fighting and saying 'YOU ******* ***, whatca go do that for with me Skateboard for!?!? Batty Boy... Go **** your Mum…' then after that one of them goes and looks for a member of staff, the SS arrives on the scene and goes down to track level, luckily all Trains approaching had been informed and the next EB (which was approaching) braked down to a crawling pace just before the station, whilst the SS was attending to the Skateboard, I hear the Chavs laughing saying things such as 'wouldn't it be funny if he caught fire and got killed' I was thinking in my mind 'you ungrateful little brats', luckily the SS returned to platform level safely and Trains were able to proceed normally, the Chavs got onto the next EB and started acting all 'tough' around the passengers, they didn't even say a thank you to the SS for what he did... Personally if I was the SS I wouldn't gave them their skateboard back... I would of taken it to the nearest rubbish skip and chucked it in there. ;D How common do items get dropped on the track?

How common do items get dropped on the track? Fairly frequently I suspect. I can recall two occasions when I was on the back. One I had was at either Manor House or Turnpike Lane when someone dropped an item between the cars. I had a word with my mate and slid down (I was a lot slimmer and more supple then) and retrieved it. The other was at Hounslow East on the west when a woman with a pushchair got out of the train. Whether she dropped something or the baby threw it I didn't see but she noticed it fall on the track. As we pulled out of the platform she jumped down on the track to retrieve it. Luclily we were on a 73 so I saw her and pulled the handle. After telling my mate what was going on I went and expressed my thoughts to her on the wisdom of doing such things.

I'm guessing that would be the polite manner of speaking occasionally heard from LUL staff I've seen some woman who got off a District train at Mile End and somehow managed to loose a shoe between the platform and car. The train left and a bloke with a grabber claw thing and some rubber on the end of a pole came and fetched it out. She was quite thankful for it, I would be if someone had saved me the embarrasment of having to walk around with only one shoe. edited because i'm a spammy and can't spell.

Hi all, i'm back from my hols in rainy Norfolk, and eagerly back at work !
In answer to the original question, I would say from expierience, the most common items dropped on the track are shoes and mobile phones.
I also seem to recall mention of a control key at Tower Hill bay........... ;D

When I was a guard I once saw a bloke have a coughing fit at Aldgate East and his false teeth shot out, skated across the platform and under the next car to mine!! As we only had six cars I got my mate to draw right forward until I could see them. I then jumped down on the track and with the guys own handkerchief got them back for him. All in a days work.

I'm guessing that would be the polite manner of speaking occasionally heard from LUL staff I don't know, I've never worked for LU Ltd. Certainly I've never found the need to use other than the kind of language one could comfortably use in mixed company.

I also seem to recall mention of a control key at Tower Hill bay........... ;D I managed to drop my key doen between train and plaform at Edgware Road once while trying to open a C-stock cab door (which can be awkward buggers to open). I then had to run upstairs to the DMT to get another one - very embarrassing, but apparently I wasn't the first! And I dropped a windscreen wiper arm onto the track at High St Ken whilst trying to fix it Fortunately no-one saw me do that!

Not exactly dropped, but if you remember that chemical fire we had, the old station, they've had to replace ALL the track by the signal box, the fire just went straight through it and all was left was a black substance and alot of melted metal.. What a shame, those tracks have been there since the seventies

It was mainly paints laquers and turpentines.
As the trucks exploded, so did the cannisters of this stuff (it's the strong industrial paint, the stuff they paint flats with)
I presume this all collected together and oozed onto the line.
I do know however the whole 100M area was evacuated. Any train planning to come through had to be diverted.
But not only did this mixture of ..mess ooze onto the track, it acted as a ignition for the fire and the fire quickly flamed across this liquid and that was the end of the rails life..
Thankfully noone was hurt and they said the chemical wasn't poisenous.
And what caused this?
Little kiddy chav b**gers thinking it's fun to see what fire can do.

How common do items get dropped on the track? Quite often, the favorite is the mobile phones! The question has to be asked, why stand holding it over the track? But yes its fairly common for things to go for a little walk along the track, and just as common that people try and go down and get the items. When members of staff go down, they come to 'an agreement' with the Line Controller and Signal Operator (If Applicable), which means that trains will be, if necessary, held away from the site so that the member of staff can get the item safely. I also seem to recall mention of a control key at Tower Hill bay........... ;D ah yes, now i can relate to that! I recall Dave's face when I did it, lets say he wasnt impressed!!
