I am standing in a station which is electrified by third rail. It is served by many trains mainly to a London terminus, some of the trains are diesel, and others are electric. There are express services from this station to the next along the line, missing out 2 stations either direction to the next major station.
I board the next train to arrive at this station. We move rapidly to the next station along the line which is a junction station, but we do not call here, instead we move another 2 to the next major station, which is again served by the same number of diesel trains as the origin, but more electrics. I stay on the train and I move up the line further and further until we reach the 2nd station, which we call at, I should mention at this point that this is where I terminate my journey as it is the last point on the major outer suburban services.
The question is, where was I to begin with, and where did I end up?

Waterloo comes to mind.... still trying to work out the higgledy-piggledy way of describing it. Try sending that to the Journey Planner as a txt on 60835...

I also say East Croydon, the diesel trains are those from Uckfield.

I think Oxted too, with the diesels coming from Uckfield. Finishing at London Bridge?

All trains stop at Hurst Green, which is immediately south of Oxted.

It is on the SWT network. Also, who said the diesel trains at both major stations are the same units? (edit: finally a quiz which takes longer than one hour!)

It's not Clapham Jct to Surbiton is it? My local station is a SWT station with diesels and electrics, and a junction, but I don't think you started at Basingstoke.

I've given a quite heavy hint about the stations... "Also, who said the diesel trains at both major stations are the same units?"
I'll give you a clue, I'm going towards London Waterloo.

Well, Reading almost fits the bill, assuming the junctions are on the Reading - Waterloo line.............

Reading is on the outer-suburban boundary, but I start before the boundary.

Just a thought, but is it Southampton Airport Parkway? Served by Electrics to Waterloo and also Voyagers on the cross-country Network. Two stations missed out to the next major one would be Southampton Central (Swaythling and St. Denys) or Winchester (Eastleigh and Micheldever). The next station is a junction, which would be Eastleigh, but most Expresses don't stop there. If the next stop for this train is Winchester, then two stops down the line would be Basingstoke (Micheldever then Basingstoke), which as tubechallenger wrote is the outer suburban terminus. Probably totally wrong with this guess, but it is the only one that I can think of.

Indeed it is Southampton Airport Parkway. The diesels I was thinking of were the Totton - Romsey service, and then the Reading - Brighton service.
