Hello all,
I was talking to a central line driver the other day and they said that all moves into sidings are done in coded manual why is this? Is it an issue with the ATO?

ATO has not been installed into the sidings, the data isn't there for the train to run to, the train wouldn't know where the block marker boards and signals were. Woodford 21 road is the exception however, this is to clear the westbound platform of the Hainault - Woodford train.

And ATP is still working?

Can also go into Debden and Newbury Park loops in ATO. That I didn't know but then again none of my duties are booked for those moves. It must be to do with being able to go "through" the siding in passenger service if needed.

If reversing back east, then yes. But it is possible to continue westbound to South Woodford in ATO (and in passenger service).

Absolutely Can't be in Coded Manual without codes True true On a side note if a driver was to select Restricted manual (without authority), would it bring all the trains in the area come to a screeching halt, Like its supposed to do on the seltrac signalled lines?

No, all the other trains would carry on until they reached a block marker with a zero code or a signal at danger. I'm not sure how a train in Restricted Manual entering a section with a train already in it would effect the other train

No, although if the RM train occupied track circuits comprising part of another route then it would put signals back to danger, potentially causing trains to lose code. On the Seltrac lines the moment the train is put into RM the VCC will generate an auto MRR round the train, which will stop any other train if their own route encroaches into the MRR. This is why it is necessary to contact the signalman before carrying out a brake test, as the brake test requires the train to be in an RM mode.

It must be to do with being able to go "through" the siding in passenger service if needed. It is possible to enter NEP or DEB sidings in ATO. But the train will stop short of the mark (where you would normally stop if you were in CM). When you change ends you would be unable to see the outlet shunt.

ATO was installed into 21rd to clear a train through to South Woodford when there was a shunt on the WB main, which happens a bit
