Hello all,
I was wondering what will happen to the train protection for the class 165 when it travels over the met line after ATC fitment? Will they keep the train stops or will they install AWS and the like?

Trainstops will be retained and new colour light signals will be installed that will be driven by the ATC system (SELTRAC).

As I understand it S stock will be passing red signals under ATO

As I understand it S stock will be passing red signals under ATO My understanding is that the colour lights will be similar to those on the Central and Victoria lines. A third aspect (likely blue) will be provided for ATC-fitted trains to run into a signalling section (as it will be protected by codes), whilst non-ATC fitted trains will treat this as a red.

Mine too. Passing any kind of red aspect as part of normal working has been anathematised for a long time.

A Correction, Traditionally a Lunar White Aspect was displayed whenever the train was equipped for ATO, and receiving the proper safety codes in order for it to proceed past a Lunar White Aspect signal. NOT a red signal. You may have noticed that on the Victoria Line's 1967 tube stock days, there was a big three aspect starter signal arrangement adjacent the platform clock, with RED, LUNAR WHITE and GREEN aspects, the Lunar White was the authority to proceed under Automatic Train Operation codes.

Thanks guys, So I'm guessing that would be the last stretch of train stop/ tripcock protected railway in the country? (after the bakerloo picc and W&C get ato)

As I understand it S stock will be passing red signals under ATO The design intention is (as other posters have said) that ATC trains will see a blue aspect. There was some discussion about whether the third aspect could be eliminated and a green or dark signal used. On the one hand its supposed to be in cab signalling so the aspect should be irrelevant; on the other hand during migration at least this could cause confusion. So the blue aspect approach still stood when I left. Thanks guys, So I'm guessing that would be the last stretch of train stop/ tripcock protected railway in the country? (after the bakerloo picc and W&C get ato) Not necessarily. There is some expectation that ETCS (European Train Control System) is introduced some time in the next 10 years or so on Chiltern and elsewhere. Also I can't recall what happens to the train stops on the Wimbledon and Richmond branches.

Just a thought....
The Met fast lines north of Harrow are signalled as BR standard four aspect (red-yellow-double yellow-green) rather than the Underground standard of two aspect (red-green) with repeaters when required (yellow-green), sometimes on the same post. Does this mean that the new signals will have to have five aspects?
Also, the 165s and 168s are fitted with ATP which is in use when working over Network Rail sections; is this or could this be introduced in conjunction with the ATC system?

ETCS sounds good - especially if it means that any Chiltern / other mainline train could use the route between Amersham and Harrow-On-The-Hill.
My only concern would be that through the removing of no longer needed trainstops this could also 'freeze out' the LU Heritage stock.
Or could it be that a commercial case could be made so that the 1938ts, Sarah Siddons, Met No.1 etc were adapted to be compatible with the newer signalling systems?

I'm sure in another thread someone said they were originally in scope but had since been descoped to save money.

When will that end of the met be going ATC? It will be a shame if they get rid of the Trainstops

The fast lines will keep the legacy signalling with CBTC overlaid on top of it. As there is no AWS magnets or TPWS installed the only form of protection for the chilterns will be the trainstops of course on a S stock these will be cut out so will have effect on them

Same as Uxbridge branch. By that I mean CBTC will be in control and will drive all legacy signal aspects. I put legacy in inverted commas as most of the signals are due to be replaced with new ones so old style but new assets. Wimbledon and Richmond will be legacy signals with CBTC overlaid.

Regarding trainstops - are there any on the IoW railway?
And can Chiltern run on the slow lines?
