PLEASE do not answer this if you have seen the pic, or know by knowledge what it is. PM me if you want to show you are right, but I'd like guesses ONLY at least till our students have had time to get in this afternoon and have a guess at it. So - what are we looking at?

The doors are missing. I think it's the weedkiller, before it acquired departmental yellow and bling-bling lighting.

I know exactly what it is, but I'm not sure if I'm counted as a 'younger one' (I'm 23).

Total guess here - if you exclude the cabs it looks remarkably similar to the 1935 stock. Is this a non-streamlined version?

OK guys, time to reveal.
In 1935 4 (not 3) sets of experimental stock were ordered. 3 were streamlined, the other looked like this. After testing it was decided the disadvantages of the curved cab of the streamlined far outweighed any notional advantage due to wind resistance (apparently the advantages only showed above 80mph!).
Apart from the obvious difference of the first window missing in the saloon, the other difference (just seen on the photo) is that the cab door opening extended up into the roof, the same as the streamlined stock (as in 'Piccadilly Days') or the guard's door on standard (pre 1938) stock.
Thanks to those that PMd me rather than spoil it for the rest.
And yes, there is a streamllined 35ts hiding in the depot - well spotted!

Cab Door opening into Roof -
Was this because the Guard operated from the Rear Cab ?

Cab Door opening into Roof - Was this because the Guard operated from the Rear Cab ? Not AFAIK - guards were always in the 'normal' tube position. But the streamline stock had to have doors extending into the roof to get the drivers in, and I guess the remaining set had the same thing just because it did......... If anyone wants a (slightly) closer shot of the streamliner I can post one - it does show the door cut-out in the roof.

I have been (rightly) taken to task by one of our youngsters for not making clear the difference between sets and trains in my earlier post. So 4 trains, each of 6 cars. 3 streamline trains, each made up of 3x2-car sets: 3x6=18 streamline cars 1 flat front train: made up of 3x2-car sets: 6 flat-front cars. Hope this clarifies things.

I have to say i don't think that the Streamlined train is hideous. I's say is quite a nice example of 30's design, one might go so far as say it is slightly Art Deco. Its a shame that more thought and engineuity is not put in to train design today. Its also a shame that no examples of these sets were preserved. In fact i have a question.
Has anyone seen one of these units in the flesh or even had a ride on one?

As all these trains were put in storage at Cockfosters depot during the second world war and remained there until 1950, when they were all converted to flat ended trailer cars, I doubt there are many here that have seen them. I have traveled on a non streamlined '35 though.
