I have a question about the set numbers carried by the Class 501 DC stock as displayed in the secondman's window and whether, when they were outside the 135 to 188 series which related to carriage numbers, anyone has information about ad hoc formations. I have maybe a couple of dozen of my own shots of the EMUs in service and whereas they usually have the sets displayed in the above series, I have come across sets numbered 109 and 112 amongst my collection. The recent 'History of the North London Railway' by the NLRHS doesn't mention formations at all - in amongst the many photos of Class 501s, 'low' numbered sets are only seen on shots taken early on in the life of the units. The shots on my Flickr pages: set 112 www.flickr.com/photos/73789322@N04/33776618201/in/album-72157632273478893/and set 109 www.flickr.com/photos/73789322@N04/33865190566/in/album-72157632273478893/A quick flick through the Ian Allen/RCTS ABCs for the time doesn't really give any useful information, although mis-formations are listed none are given set numbers. Any information gratefully received.

Those look like train numbers (like those displayed on Underground trains), which change from day to day depending on which unit is working which diagram, rather than permanent set numbers. A BAkerloo working timetable from that era might shed some light on this.
As far as I recall, set numbers were never painted on 501s.

The three number displays were certainly changeable and I agree they were probably used to designate diagrams when the sets were first introduced. However, by the 1980s (and probably earlier) most formations were using them to show their 'set numbers' - i.e. 61178+70178+75178 would show '178' in the secondman's window. I'd just like to know if the sets showing 109 and 112, and possibly others, had set formations of mis-formed cars.
I never photographed a set with the number painted on. However, the 'History of the NLR' mentioned above shows at least three sets with painted numbers in use right at the end of their working lives, 152, 156 and 170 at least with painted numbers on the jumper cable box beneath the driver's window on the front of the cars.

All you ever wanted to know on Class 501 headcodes!
North London Line Class 501 Headcodes
First Letters
A - Express B- Stopping C - Empty Stock
The full codes were in the front of the WTT after introduction of the 501's and the full list in the 1962 WTT was:
EUSTON AND Down Up Watford 1 1 Willesden Jct. New Station 6 1 Harrow & Willesden 7 1 Bushey & Oxhey 8 1 Croxley Green 9 1

3 was used by the DMU's working the Belmont and St Albans branches, which were shown in the timing pages but made no reference to the B3 headcode.
The 1963 WTT list was reduced with the closure of Mitre Bridge Shed for electric trains and the withdrawal of passenger services on the south curve of the Croxley Triangle. This list in 1963 and 1964 was as follows:
EUSTON AND Down Up Watford 1 1 Willesden Jct. New Station - 1
BROAD ST AND Down Up Watford 2 2 Richmond 4 4 Willesden Jct. High Level 5 4 Willesden Jct. New Station 6 2 Harrow & Willesden 7 2

WATFORD JUNCTION AND Down Up Harrow & Wealdstone - 7 Croxley Green 9 9
EMPTY TRAINS TO Down Up Dalston Sidings X X Croxley Green Shed Y Y Stonebridge Park Shed Z Z
The 1965 WTT saw a through Broad Street to Croxley Green and a Broad Street to Watford via Hampstead Heath service with one each way in the peak direction, with the Belmont service now closed 3 was finally used, so the list was amended as follows:
EUSTON AND Down Up Watford 1 1 Willesden Jct. New Station - 1
BROAD ST AND Down Up Watford via Queens Park 2 2 Watford via Hampstead Heath 3 3 Richmond 4 4 Willesden Jct. High Level 5 4 Willesden Jct. New Station 6 2 Harrow & Willesden 7 2 Croxley Green 9 2

WATFORD JUNCTION AND Down Up Harrow & Wealdstone - 7 Croxley Green 9 9

By the 1967 WTT the list was reducing again as follows:

BROAD ST AND Down Up Watford via Queens Park 2 2 Watford via Hampstead Heath 3 3 Richmond 4 4 Willesden Jct. High Level 5 4
