Two-parter: For our non-LU T/ops, identify the location. For our T/ops, does anyone know when the use of two flags at once was banned, and for what reason? This pic was 1987: was the driver OK then with both flags, or was he pushing his luck? And for our younger/ newer members, all the info on the flag switches can be found in this thread

The location is Bromley-by-Bow, and like adw said, both flags can be raised to overcome traction defects, according to DD. The caveat is that the Line Controller must be informed before doing so, as running with both flags up causes the nice man with the letters 'DMT' on his jacket to show up.

Correct TOK (at last!)
But the second question remains. When introduced, I'm sure both flags were permitted under normal running conditions. Assumimg I'm right (not necessarily so!), when was the rule changed??

i know one reason is that the signalling overlaps east of bromley - by - bow most of them were never designed for 60mph (d stock top speed) and speaking to a train tech a while ago he says with the weak field flag up it does cause the motors to arc occasionly so this is the reason why it has always been not allowed in the sub surface parts. but in passenger service the only places i know where you would get anywhere need this speed if used would be east ham - barking eb and both roads elm part - dagenham east.

So a mere 26 years after the introduction of 60mph stock, there are still no efforts to make the track and signals anywhere near to fulfilling its potential!

So let's transfer the D stock to the Met and put it on the Baker Street-Amersham diagrams ;D
