I am a regular on the met. I have noted this year that some trains are run with the longitudinal seating layout.
If I am correct these are S8 stock. Why are such trains being used on the met (seats are inferior). By any chance are they used on fast/semi fast trains to watford/chesham/amersham? Are they interchanged with H+C or district/circle?
I have noted on wembley match days that the high density units are used. Any further info would be great.

There is at least one "S7+1". This is an S7 unit with an extra car inserted, as it's an S7 not an S8 it lacks the transverse seating.

And that's it. Just a coincidence if you got that one on a match day. At one time there were three S7+1 trains, covering a mods programme on a lot of the S8 fleet. Final fleet plan is just one such train. Arises out of the extra train bought nominally for the Met Line Extension although the specific train set up as S7+1 is not in fact the last one built.

At this time there are still two running around - but yes, once ATC fitment is completed for the S8 stock one will be returned to S7 configuration, leaving just one S7+1 in service. I explained this in a bit more (confusing) detail recently- perhaps someone can find the thread, as I'm on my phone at the moment.

From the Croxley extension thread: Technically it's an S7... and two -1+1 (if we want to be really pedantic about it). A new S7 (21567/67) was built to replace 21327/8, which will remain as an S7+1 and be transferred to the Metropolitan line. 21323/4 will remain as an S7+1 until ATC fitment is complete on the S8 stock, and will then revert to S7 configuration. Additionally, two further M2 cars (note, not M2Ds) have been built to replace 25384 (in 21323/4) and 25386 (21327) to allow those trains (the S7-1s) to enter service, which they now are. At the end of this magic merry go round of trains there will be 58 S8s, 133 S7s, 1 S7+1 and one spare M2D car. Confused? Probably...

There is at least one "S7+1". This is an S7 unit with an extra car inserted, as it's an S7 not an S8 it lacks the transverse seating. What was the reason of not using a full S8 train set, and instead using an S7+8? Was it that they miscalculated the amount of S8 units that would be needed, or was it intentional from the start?

It's the extra required for the Croxley link, assuming it ever goes ahead. This wasn't originally planned. The cost of making it a proper S8 is prohibitive. If the link does not happen it will be interesting to see what happens to the train.

It was ordered after S8 production had ended, re-equipping the S7 production line to manufacture one S8 would have been hideously expensive so an S7+1 was a solution.

Is there any difference between an S7 and S8 apart from the extra carriage and seating?

I think the seating layout determines the location of some significant components.
