What kind of weird-$%@* signal is THAT!?!
Not only that, but the line the train is on appears to be missing a positive conductor rail...

I know there's aspects to consider (such as the conductor rail and signal) but I've got this strange feeling that it's between Eal Common and Rayners L - can't think why though.

No to both. The signal's the clue - it's (almost) unique. Get that and you have the location.
(Think NR)

I think it's somewhere on the East London Line. New X maybe?

I think it's somewhere on the East London Line. New X maybe? That is d*mn close Tom, but not quite close enough. If you explain the signals perhaps I'll let you off!

According to my sources Surrey Canal junction was never associated with the Underground network

That type of home signal with the pointed end was used on the Ealing and Shepherds Bush (now Central) for their automatic signals...
However, (1) it is LQ and the ones on the E&SBR were three position UQ - quite unique, and (2) the distant signal has a Coligny-Welch(sp?) lamp which gave an illuminated ">" and these were favoured on the southern regions (LSWR?). Concrete signal posts were also a favourite of the Southern.
I await the true answer with interest.

Hutch is quite right about the type of signal.
It's 1947 and on the approach to New Cross Gate.
Metropolitan Railway stop signal, SR Coligny Welch distant.
(Sooooo close, Tom)
