I feel that the current diagram has been all but ruined (in aesthetic terms) by the inclusion of zones, all the non LU lines, and the disabled access markers.Obviously the standard map should include these things, but it would be nice if LU also made available an 'Underground Only' version, with all but the actual LU lines (and the Thames) removed. It would not be a major undertaking, just involving the deletion of various sections of the PDF file (or the file that generates it). Well, for my new office I was looking for a nice LU design map to print. As you I was quite frustrated by all the extra information that takes away from the design. Since I know my way around Illustrator quite well, I imported the TFL PDF's into the software, and I started cleaning up. I got rid of the Overground lines, London Rail and the London Trams. I kept in the DLR because I liked how it filled things up on the side, though I made the colour solid. Of course, when I was almost done, I remembered that the Elisabeth would also be underground, and since it would be a big addition to the tube, I added that as well to the map. Because I want it to feel like a more timeless design, the background is beige, with the map lines a darker tone. My most "controversial" addition is that I coloured the labels with the colours of the line. So, this is how the map looks today. upload.krisvandesande.be/files/281216/1080857.jpegI'd love feedback ! <<superteacher: thread split>>

After some Reddit scrutiny, I fixed some more small issues, and I re-added the zones, but very, very subtle. Also I added back Heathrow Terminal 1, because nostalgia and make it more timeless. What do you fine people think? Any nitpick details I missed? upload.krisvandesande.be/files/030117/7421579.jpeg

Looks Good, one possible nit pick, but may be deliberate as the service is not worth much, Watford North Curve.

I'm not an expert on that level of detail yet A curve of track linking Rickmansworth with Croxley directly, allowing services such as Amersham - Watford - Northwood to be run (as was run during engineering works a few years ago). See: carto.metro.free.fr/cartes/metro-tram-london/Hmm .. my mind is mush at the moment, I can't seem to figure it out. 😳 Well click on this link the map is now centred on Rickmansworth. You might wanna zoom in a bit, but you see, next to Rickmansworth South Sidings is "Watford triangle", with "North Junction", "East Junction", "South Junction", "North Curve" and "South Curve" all marked on the diagram. So you can see what the North Curve is now, can't you? It allows a train to run directly from Rickmansworth to Croxley to Watford, right? Rather than going from Rickmansworth to Moor Park. And the same in the other direction, too, you can run from Watford to Croxley to Rickmansworth, instead of going from Watford to Croxley to Moor Park. Now some trains use this link in passenger service at the start of the day. For example, train 472D departs Chesham at 05.16, then serves Chalfont & Latimer, Chorleywood, Rickmansworth, Croxley and Watford, arriving at Watford 05.40½, you see? Also, the North Curve is sometimes used for passenger trains all day during engineering work that might be taking place on the line. However, very few trains use this route in normal passenger service, so it isn't actually shown on the tube map, or the diagrams inside cars. But you could show it on yours. If you wanted to.

3 trains a day 0516 Chesham to Watford, 0608 Rickmansworth to Watford and 0049 Watford to Rickmansworth
Was also used new years day between approx 3am-10am. All Amersham/Chesham services ran via Watford.

Yes, like that exactly Perfect! Thanks for that insight ... I love nitpicking like that, it adds details and a true deeper meaning to these stark lines on a map.

If Romford - Upminster is on the map, why not Greenford - West Ealing where it connects with a Crossrail station to Heathrow ??

Interchange to where? There is now no longer going to be any direct connection to Crossrail from Barbican. In addition it would be far too costly to realign the westbound road to facilitate this.

If Romford - Upminster is on the map, why not Greenford - West Ealing where it connects with a Crossrail station to Heathrow ?? Romster isn't on the map - nor is any Overground route. The Greenford branch isn't anything to do with TfL, and never was, so it seems inconsistent to include it.

Make Barbican a 'plain' station, not an interchange.

Why have you chosen to get rid of the Overground, but keep the dangleway?

Why have you chosen to get rid of the Overground, but keep the dangleway? It was a nice splash of colour IMO. And just a tiny bit, not like the massive overground. Personal preference I guess.

One very minor niggle:
Bakerloo line - Willesden Junction and Queens Park have their circles (and associated text) very slightly offset to the right.
When it's finished, could we have the PDF (or a very high resolution png/tiff/jpg) as I'd like to get a very large print for my office wall.
I have large prints of around a dozen diagrams going back to the original, but this is the first I've actually though would make a good permanent display. With the others it was a matter of not being able to pick any one, but this has a stand-out 'USP'.

There is some inconsistency with regards to whether interchange symbols are used when there was an interchange with LO. Queens Park has an interchange sign but Blackhorse Road doesn't. Some NR interchanges have an interchange symbol eg Seven Sisters whereas some like Wembley Central don't.

Kris,
this is awesome.. great work. it's one of the cleanest/nicest looking alternative maps that I've seen people do. (i'm the chap from Londonist btw who made the video interview with the guy at TfL who actually does design the tube map!)
you asked for people to nit-pick, and i am happy to do so below, but purely to be constructive, not to be negative. we're at a stage now where London is so complicated it's impossible to make something that everyone is going to be happy with, all we can do it get close. IMHO it's time TfL ditched the tube map (and called it the 'TfL Map' which is what it really is - 40% of the current tube map is not even tube). and just go with large paper maps. the days of the pocket maps and surely numbered. Anyway...
- Brave and bold to colour the names/labels! love it! however i would make Stratford the purple Crossrail (don't use the 'E' word) colour, and not the DLR colour. - having said that Acton Main Line is coloured piccadilly blue, and not Crossrail purple - you've used Victoria blue on the whole line... except for Euston. why does the Northern win out here, whereas the Victoria wins out at Stockwell? - i love how you DONT use connector blobs where the same line connects, e.g. Woodford! - i love the spacing as well, showing more realistic distance between stations - i disagree abuot the north curve. not a regular service, which is what your map implies, take it off... - Chorleywood and Rickmansworth should also have a BR symbol if Chalfont & L has one? - Chalfont & L should surely have a connector blob too, if Amersham is worthy of one? interchange between Tube and National Rail - Paddington .. FOUR blogs! agh! what if you moved the Crossrail line ABOVE royal oak and westbourne park, and reduce the number of paddington connector blobs to just three - DLR branch that come from Pudding Mill... have it go into a different connector blob at Stratford, otherwise it looks like you can get a train from Pudding Mill to Stratford international - Walthamstow Central needs a connector blob and BR symbol. If you're doing one at Seven Sisters (for overground) then Walthamstow needs one too - I actually WOULD put Overground on the map (good luck with that!) but leave the Trams off, yes. - There is no need for the Dangleway to be on the map. It is not a viable public transport option. - the Northern Line and Piccadilly Line has no connector blob at Kings' Cross - Why two connector blobs at Westminster? can get away with having just one - "high street kensington" always look so much better if 'Kensington' is on a second line. otherwise it crashes into the Picc names too much - The purple of the crossrail at Holborn actually touches the connector blob of Central/Picc at Holborn, it shouldn't touch ... - Why have a fourth connector blob at bank for the DLR? why not just have it run into the one that the Northern Line uses. it is directly underneath the Northern Line in real life, dead close! - You chose to use District coloured green all the way along the eastern end of the district... except for Bow Road, looks odd. make it green! - arguably, Barons Court should have connector blobs, as you can change there between two different lines.
Gosh, i'd better stop there. You did ask people to nitpick! sorry! it does look great though, really really nice. And would also love a large PDF of this that i could print out poster size and stick up on my wall.
Geoff.
