It looks like there will be snow tommorow. I expect there to be some signal failures . Hope that it's not too bad. From your experience which lines are most vulnerable to snow problems, I imagine the epping branch and also Chesham area? What are the likely impacts of snow - wheelslip, frozen points?

Don't forget the conductor rails. I know there are deicing trains, but a good heavy snow fall will just pile up on top of the apparently deiced rails. That can cause a fair amount of fun and games before it starts to thaw or sufficient trains have passed over to push it aside.

Depends on how much and what "sort" of snow Based on past experience, lines with more exposed reaches are more likely to be effected.

Normally biggest problems are crews late signing on due to being delayed on route to work (a few years ago I remember it snowed during an afternoon, there was a pile up on the North Circular and virtually every late turn driver at both Golders Green and East Finchley was late) , trains getting stalled particularly in sidings and entering or leaving depots, plus trains getting all manner of minor defects caused by the cold. It turns into a vicious cycle, as soon as one thing goes wrong and the line sits still for a few minutes it is more likely multiple trains will get stuck as the current rails ice up or someone tries to use a non-deiced siding, etc. This will be the first time matured TBTC gets exposed to proper ice and snow. My fear is that it will perform terribly, but for everyone's sake let's hope I am wrong.

Any line with open areas are prone to signal failures due to snow be it being impacted in unheated point mechanisms, trainstops, shunt signals

Remember a few years ago when snow fell from about 4pm; the M11 was stuck solid for hours, and cars trying to get up Traps Hill in Loughton simply slid back down again. The Central Line carried on working, and did so well, but the pyrotechnic displays from the shoes at the points on the London side of both Woodford and Loughton had to be seen to be believed

I also remember back in the early 90s just after the "Company Plan was brought in. I was doing my late turn at Croxley. At about 1730 hrs there was a a snowfall that started and just went on and on. We had a N/B that managed to get to Watford but that was the last. A bit later it came back, pulled out of Croxley and came to halt about 200 yards south. A received a call from the L/C requesting I go and see what was going on. As the station was single manned I had to ask one of my regular customers to tell potential passengers there was no service. It transpired that the extremely heavy snow had bought some trees down one of which had got tangled up under the train which was going nowhere. The driver and I had to evacuate to train and escort the passengers back to Croxley. There were no more trains until about 1000 hrs the following day. During the night I had a visit from the ERU and the Met Line vegetation control team plus later a catering unit. What a night that was. I finished my previous day's late turn at about 1000 hrs the following day.
