Can someone please confirm for me what the longest, continuous, one-train trip on the Underground is? I was going to ask Geoff on Londonist, but now I'm a member here, it only seems natural to ask here. Some sources say West Ruislip to Epping on the Central at 34 miles. And that has always been my feeling. But I would put money on Aldgate to Amersham not being far off 34 miles, or maybe even more, but maybe that isn't a single train. Does it split at Baker St? Or how about Cockfosters to Heathrow? James

Longest journey by length is West Ruislip to Epping (or vv) at 34.1 miles.
Longest journey by time is Cockfosters-Cockfosters via Terminal 4 at roughly 2 hours.

Do we count Cockfosters to Cockfosters via T4 loop? Technically, it is one journey I suppose. I however, it takes a lot longer than 2 hours because going one way it takes one hour and 40 minutes. Double that and you get 3 hours and 20 minutes!

Oops! Slip of the finger. Should say roughly 3 hours. 😬
It's not a journey anyone would make, but it's a perfectly reasonable journey imo. At no point does the train reverse or "terminate", and it has to continue through T4 to T123. This is quite different to the other looped station, Kennington, where trains could terminate and reverse via a siding, or regularly are 'tipped out' and still go round the loop, for training purposes.
Although my argument is flawed when there's an Amersham via Watford service running (definitely a through train and one journey, but with a reversal), as happens on New Years' Day and during engineering works... 🤔

It would seem reasonable to say that the longest section of track traversed continuously by one train is Epping to West Ruislip, but the longest continuous journey is Cockfosters to Cockfosters.
I think that may be one to do in the summer.

While the longest line (end to end) is the Central line, Chesham is the furthest station from London.
