I'm sure I remember the Wimbledon service being terminated at Moorgate during a summer period way back, maybe the 60s. I do recall that it went back to the usual in due course, after I think maybe some months. Anyone recall the details? Was it weekends only?

There was also a service from Richmond along the top of the Circle - to Aldgate I think
It ran on Easter Mondays and perhaps a couple of other Bank Hols
Photos exist somewhere, and my fading memory tells me that 1964 was the last year
Special destination boards were hung on hooks on the old train indicators at Earls Court

In the mid 1960's On Bank Hoilday Mondays, the District line train service from Wimbledon / Putney Bridge to Edgware Road was extended via Baker Street to Aldgate.

Special destination boards were hung on hooks on the old train indicators at Earls Court Were these hung so as to obscure one of the other destinations, if so: which?

Yes.
POSSIBLY the blanked out "Not stopping at Gloucester Road & S Ken" yellow and black destinations which had only recently been stopped.
The "hooks" existed for some years afterwards. Don't know if they were ever used again

There was a lengthy thread on this previously on this forum if you care to look. I provided set working details and times. The service ran on Saturdays and some public holidays until mid 1972 when the DR went over to 7 car operation. It was usually from Wimbledon to Aldgate, Liverpool Street or Moorgate, run by Parsons Green crews who also worked 2 trains each way on the Circle on Sundays. There was no through service from Richmond or Ealing Broadway to these places in my time on the DR. 1970-73. Here is the thread that contains the info:

Careful now, someone will be wanting a new set of trips programmed into S stock! Yes, the whole of the SSL being S stock does open up some interesting options!

Careful now, someone will be wanting a new set of trips programmed into S stock! Is there a maximum number of trips that can be stored, or is it (in theory, obviously) possible for there to be pre-programmed routes between every pair of stations on the SSR? Wimbledon to Chesham via Aldgate anyone?

Would an S8 stock be allowed to operate on other routes, because the S7 stock doesn't fit in all platforms, so potentially there could be up to two cars that don't fit in some places if an S8 was used? (e.g. I'm thinking of S7 stock going to Baker St from Hammersmith, I think the first car door's don't open, so how would it would for an S8).

There might be other problems in places - for example, could you fit eight cars between the buffer stops and the fouling point of the points at Hammersmith Met? Edgware Road might be a squeeze too.

Wimbledon to Chesham via Aldgate anyone? Currently the limit is 999 trips although there are a very few numbers within that reserved for Not in Service and a couple of other uses. Currently there are around 550 trips actually assigned (including the Met Line Extension ones - perhaps a curse like those Elstree plates in 38TS?!!). There will be a few new ones with ATC and the new crossovers but also a few which can be removed such as the Bromley-by-Bow and Hornchurch reversers now that the crossovers there have been removed. The current scheme only allows for one line name per trip. As this thread has shown, that's a limitation that in retrospect is a little bit of a nuisance. It's all software so if you spend enough time and money I guess it could be changed.

Wimbledon to Chesham via Aldgate anyone? I was actually thinking about this the other day. Wouldn't it be possible to have a special "post wembley" set of trains that go in all of the directions around the circle and spoke off whenever possible?

There are already too many trains on the north side of the Circle line.
Terminating trains at Moorgate delays the service in both directions.

Moorgate is slowwww and would only create more problems. There's very little capacity left on the top side of the Circle, and if you were running trains through you'd want to get them pushed out the other side - either through to at least West Ham/Plaistow or round the Circle. In reality the quickest place to turn trains now on that side is At King's Cross, but it depends on sufficient gaps on either road, as well as additional train operators to 'step back'.

Whilst we are rapidly heading from "Historical" to some form of "RIPAS" (sorry mods!) - the thought occurs to me that if off-peak the Met terminated at Baker Street then Aldgate would be free-ed up for these extra trains along the top of the circle. But like I said, discussion of anything not related to what has been belongs on a different board!
