Hi folks, this is my first post as a newbie so please excuse me if I am doing this all wrong!
I believe there has been some discussion about this line following its singling in 1932 and operation of the one-car shuttle. My query concerns operation of the line prior to this. As I understand it the line was built as double track throughout including a double track junction with the North & South Western Junction Railway just northeast of the North London railway station at South Acton. It is stated that it was used for goods trains from 15 May 1899 and for electric passenger trains from 13 June 1905. From the 1913 Revision 25" OS map, published 1915, there do not appear to be any crossovers and there is only one platform, located on the westbound track adjacent to the NL up (northbound) line. Available photographs only show one platform. So my query is how were the services operated over the double tracks from 1905 until February 1932?
One theoretical but highly unlikely method would be for the District Railway train to pass the station and pull forward through the junction onto the NSWJR up line, reverse via a trailing crossover to the down line and then back through the junction into the westbound platform line. From 1930 this wouldn't have worked anyway as the connection with the NSWJR was removed.
Another curious feature on the OS map is at that at the NE end of the platform there is a double junction into a pair of short parallel spurs in a northerly direction into the corner of the Yard, again without any crossovers so that each spur is only connected to its corresponding running line. I have seen reference to the line when opened, being used for carrying materials etc. for the construction of the District Railway extension to Harrow. "Both the L.N.W.R. and the Midland used the Acton loop to send freight to Ealing Common. In 1913 additional sidings were laid for them near Acton Town, but the route soon fell out of use and the connection with the N.S.W.J. line was removed in 1930."
I wonder whether both lines were used for freight traffic but passenger trains only used one (electrified) track? I would welcome any information, if available.
