I have to agree A60stock . The new system appears to be worse than the old light boxes. Displaying the same train on two or three DMIs is confusing for passengers. It is also inaccurate. Presumably it gives extra work for station staff as well as there are 'platform alterations' for every service. Not stating Aylesbury anywhere in the DMI seems bizarre considering all NB Chiltern trains call at Aylesbury. Most passengers don't care who operates the service, they want to know where it is going. Arguably with these changes, LU have failed to meet the Accessible Train Station Design for Disabled People: A Code of Practice which covers all LU stations where NR trains call at. Ironically, it appears the old light boxes pass more of the code of practice criteria than the DMIs! Has anyone been at Harrow Platform 1 at evening peak? Does anyone know how the DMI handles trains not stopping at Rickmansworth? AFAIK, there is only one train description (LM2) available for Chilterns calling at Harrow.

At least the new boxes dot't show Chiltern stopping at Moor Park

what has happened to the displays at the top of the stairs which lead to platforms 3/4 and platform 1?
I think the old lightboxes should be kept alongside the new ones as two displays are always better than one

This new system does not appear to be popular! I shall reserve judgement until I've seen it!

I was wondering would it be a wise idea to introduce the national rail style announcement lady at baker street and harrow on the hill?
Im talking about the lady who says "The next train to depart from platform x will be the (time) (operator) service to (destination), calling at....."
Ofcourse as this is an underground line, it would be in this format, i will use baker street as an example:
"The next train to depart from platform 4 will be a Fast Metropolitan line service to Amersham, Calling at, Finchley Road, Wembley Park, Harrow on the Hill, Moor Park..............and Amersham"
"The next train to depart from platform 2 will be an all stations Metropolitan line service to Uxbridge, Calling at, Finchley Road, Wembley Park, Preston road, Northwick Park, Harrow on the Hill, West Harrow, Rayners Lane.................and Uxbridge"
Get my vibe? I think it would suit the met very well due to the stopping patterns particularly in the peak. Im only saying install these at baker street and Harrow as these are the two places i think they would be the most suited, Baker street for certain and maybe Harrow

Baker street would have problems with residents, probably possible at Harrow though.

Third train's description is useful! I have seen this description on station departure details from apps and assume it is a limitation in the data feed, the system does not have the full Train detail. Unless the underlying information systems are about to be upgraded quickly to provide the full information needed by the displays, then perhaps the new displays should have been delayed. More in accurate information on the new displays is in many ways a poorer service to passengers than the simple light boards they have replaced.

Regardless if it was a traditional light box describer the train description has not been recognised by the signalling system so the light box still wouldn't of lit up at all as it's a non recognised code.

This evening the light boxes on platforms 5 and 6 had been removed. The new DMIs have not yet been installed. Announcements were directing passengers to check the destinations on the front and sides of trains.
Stranegly enough Platforms 3 and 4 still have their (switched off) lightboxes in addition to their shiny new DMIs.
My earlier question still remains. Will the new system be able to provide more information than the light boxes? (Well more than just adding the arrival time of the trains). First train to depart maybe?

Yes when the upgrade arrives until then they will work from trackernet or from the traditional describer equipment

Do we know where the old equipment went?
I would love to think, that whoever planned these updates, took a few seconds to ask the LT Museum staff if they would be interested in this old equipment rather than simply let them pass to a scrap merchant who would doubtless be happy with a windfall gift and quite possibly already listing them for very substantial amounts on eBay.
I suspect that even if the Museum lacked space to house these describers as an exhibit, they would probably be able to arrange to auction them off and if nothing else see their value accrue to the museum funds.

Yes I hope they have been saved. It's a real shame they have been removed as there are so few in service now. Plus the new ones are too small to be read at any distance!

This evening, the platform 5 and 6 new train describers were active. I only got a very brief look as my train was just pulling in. As expected the new describers seemed to list the same trains (mix of "Aldgate", "Baker St" and "Check front of Train", but with the train just pulling in displayed only on its own platforms board.
I presume if both platforms are occupied, there will be no clues as to which train will depart first?

I didn't think there was a sign currently for the first train to depart and it was done via a announcement from staff on the platform / station control room.

The placement is poor as well - it's no longer possible whilst on platform 3, to see what the next train in platform 1 will be, to allow tactical decisions without having to run dangerously up and down stairs...

Not been to Harrow in a while but the photos posted appear to show they are small. If it is one per platform it doesn't improve matters. Even Northwood has two large DMIs!

today there was a semi fast train on plat 5, the dmi correctly showed it as calling at finchley road and all stations to aldgate. Moments later, it started displaying the stopping pattern of the train on platform 6 which was an all stations train. Think there needs to be better clarity between the two platforms. Thank goodness for the highly informative s stock, or else any non regular would have just boarded the train!
Also surprised the opportunity to have two per platform was not taken, very odd thinking by whoever decided to replace the lightboxes

The display on platform 1 today was showing a new message along the lines of "next Chesham fast in 2 minutes , listen for announcement regarding platform detail". The PA announced next Chesham Fast platform 1. So no doubt many were surprised when the Chesham Fast arrived on platform 3. I could be wrong but I think the train arriving on platform 3 even took the driver who was to take over the train by surprise as I saw a TFL worker go from the front of platform 1!

Apart from Earls Court are there many light boxes still in use?

Apart from Earls Court are there many light boxes still in use? Earls Court doesn't really have the 1960s light-boxes in the style of those going at HoH, it has 1900s style District Railway ones. others are; Gloucester Road WB pfm.1 (same style as Earls Court), Stepney Green EB, Upney EB, Upton Park WB* and EB, Barons Court WB (Barons Court EB 1930s style) (*=still displays 'METROPOLITAN LINE' although it's been Hammersmith & City since 1991!)
