I have just noticed that TFL have already upgraded their POM's in the ticket hall to read Southeastern's newly launched New Key ITSO Smartcards. The cards were only introduced this month! I placed my card onto the POM card reader at Cannon Street TFL Station, and it correctly displayed my ticket details and journey history as held on the card!

They haven't been specifically upgraded for Southeastern's version of The Key. The whole point of ITSO is to have a transferable standard that can work on any implementation to avoid the duplication of technology.
LUL's POMs were upgraded to read ITSO cards around 18 months ago.

I have noticed that the SE ITSO Key also works the LUL Gates at Waterloo, Victoria, Charing Cross, Cannon Street, and Elephant and Castle Tube. It even works the SWT Ticket gates at Waterloo and Vauxhall stations as a matter of interest (A Non-SE route!), even though the small print for the Key, states that it is only compatible with Southeastern Services and selected Zone One LUL Stations.

It may be new to SouthEastern but at least one other railco that serves London (Southern, I think) has been using The Key for some years.
It is now even possible to place London Travelcard season tickets on The Key, although unlike when they are on Oyster you must touch in / out at all times. Alas, this rule prevents their use when making split ticket journeys - ie: a journey that is paid for using two different tickets. This is easy with paper tickets (as long as the tickets share one common start & end point) and at boundary stations (or boundary zonal locations) passengers are able to stay on the trains. As yet the way of facilitating this does not seem to have been decided upon* by the mainline railways for smartcard ticketing using the ITSO specification. Of course the one thing that passengers absolutely do not want to have to do is what is necessary when using Oyster PAYG / PrePay as part of a split ticket journey, this being to leave the train at the boundary station, touch in / out and then reboard the same train (or more likely, catch the next train)
*If it has been decided upon then I question whether it has been disclosed to the travelling public.

Greater Anglia have launched an ITSO spec card All the TOCs will eventually be doing this, as nowadays this is being made a requirement of franchise agreements when they are renewed. Simon
