On my return trip from Uxbridge to HOH today, the stairs down to platforms 4/5 were closed off, and we were directed via other platforms and the subway. As I approached the subway along P5/6, I saw a train arrive at P4 and rushed for the subway stairs, only to be informed by a guy that the train wouldn't be going without him - he was the relieving operator.
I asked why the stairs were closed; apparently the contractors replacing the stairs had installed them at varying heights, so people were tripping up on them!

Stairs from the Gateline to Platforms 3&4 are currently closed yes. All of the stair treads have had the modern non slip surface (not sure how to better describe it) placed on them in recent weeks. Not sure it is actually plastic, but that is the closest material to liken it to.
Believe that there was an unusually high number of customers tripping or falling on the stairs. This would suggest that perhaps they were not installed quite 100% to plan as above. Even the most minor defect or miscalculation can cause an issue with this sort of thing though, and very hard if not impossible to spot.
Hopefully they'll be back in service in the morning.
