In the sixties on the BR owned sections of the DR there were manual signal boxes with semaphore signals.
Now where were they situated and what were their names? If you can (but not essential) what were the opening times?
A prize of a book or DVD of your choice within reason will be given to the nearest answer.
This is mainly aimed at our younger members but any non-railway poster can have a go.
Please ....NO ONE connected with actually running the train-set need post

Using an old map, I've been able to locate signal boxes at:
Just south of Gunnersbury Just north of Kew Gardens Between Kew Gardens and Richmond at the junction with the line from Waterloo Just east of Richmond.
Just south of East Putney Just north of Southfields Just north of Wimbledon.
These show as unlabelled rectangles on a modern map, along with the much larger (and presumably newer) box at Richmond.

Right you have the locations (but some were gone by the sixties) but do you know the box NAMES

Nice one Q8!! Good to see a mention of North Ealing ground frame, which was de-comissioned (and the crossover removed) about the same time as I joined the job. And those signal cabin opening times on the Piccadilly. Early morning and late evening, there was NO control/regulation of the service between Hammersmith and Wood Green - so there must have been a lot of early running! Also remember South Harrow IMR, formally a District cabin (code WV) being controlled from Rayners Lane (a Metropolitan cabin!) in the those days. Outrageous for a former DR station & sidings to be worked by a Met signalman methinks!! Have a feeling it was.... Metropolitan Railway 1 -- District Railway 0 ....in this case, eh?? ;D

Yes. And a bugbear to District Controllers was Gunnersbury signal box. If the early turn man did not show up it stayed shut until someone did. So it was 'all to Ealing' until that time. Similarly sometimes they had a leave cover man in the box who's finishing time was 22:00 and if they did not want overtime the box would close. The LMR reversed at Acton Central I think in the times the box was closed.
Another thing about Gunnersbury junction was that we could annoy the guy in the box sometimes by speeding. The restriction over the junction was 20mph but no-one ever took notice of it and we would roar over the points at 40 mph plus. The LMR though would dawdle in at about 10.
One day my driver banged over the ironwork at about 50 going into Gunnersbury. Bit of a rough stop but we did anyway. On the way back the signalman was standing on the platform and he thumped on the cab door.
"'ere mate I want 8/6 orf you" "Woffor?" "You comes flying in 'ere over them points and caused such a herfquake you sent my new teapot flying, so I want 8/6" My mate gave him a ten bob note and he was satisfied.
