Hello I found this rather interesting documentary style video about the running of the Northern in 1990, it's called Northern line Above Us London.
Enjoy

The true "Misery Line" era! Great memories.

Why was it called that and why more than any other line?

Why was it called that and why more than any other line? The service was notoriously bad! However, it was even worse in the 70's with the shortages of guards and the aging 1938 stock being very unreliable.

Brings back great memories of my childhood in Tufnell Park.
Think I spotted a brief glimpse of one of the rare 1956 prototype units at circa 9:51/2.
TK.

All I can remember about it was the "surprised" look it seemed to have front on compared to the 59/62s, like it's eyebrows were raised!

Yes that's right - I loved seeing a '56 stock coming into the platform as a kid - it was a rare treat - you could see 'em coming down the tunnel (prior to refurbishment) as the domino headlights marked them apart from a 'usual' 1959 stock.
They each had rare and different peculiarities - some had that weird front end roof treatment you referred to - others had an unusual prominent waist band running long the outside below the windows, all had extra wood trim inside - I loved 'em and it's a shame we didn't see one unit, or a whole unit, preserved....

The 56 stock had nicer seats than the 59's.

There were three different 1956 type trains, built by three different manufacturers at the time. It was to try out and evaluate different models of trains before ordering the main production of the 1959 & 1962 tube stock to begin. I remember riding on them, they had really deep seat cushions instead of the thinner ones on the 1959 & 1962 trains which followed.
