The first picture is the disc which goes infront of the light to give it colour.

A piece of metal with two holes drilled in it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Your perspicacity and powers of obeservation not to mention your predeliction for stating the blindingly obvious amaze me. ;D (AND it ain't metal clever clogs it's either plastic or bakelite)

Number two looks like the two contacts inside a signal head for the wiring. The large centre hole is where the blub goes.
Number four looks like the back of a name plate for a push button cabin or an IMR although they are usually black.

Number 2 is indeed a lampholder. Still no luck on number four, which is indeed not metal (I think it's a ceramic of sorts).

The little metal thing that looks like a pencil is reminiscent of a float and the brass bits are definitly cable crimps

well is mine correct then?! Yes, hence the labelling of it at the top. Aha! well ceramic says to me voltage, so it may be some sort of terminal block You're getting there, most people have never seen the component on it's own though. They're miscellaneous bits from my spares box. The brass bits actually pre-date crimps but I'll give you that. They're (no.5) Cringle eye terminals and (no.7) Ross Courtney 'Facile' Terminals. For a guide to their age, have a look at www.planefacts.co.uk/world_war_one/parts_supplies/pages/ross_courtney_parts_gif.htm

Tom. Does number 4 normally have a cover or is visble all the time? It's got something to do with signal mains I'm pretty sure.

Still no luck on number four, which is indeed not metal (I think it's a ceramic of sorts). This is pure guess work on my part but is it an insulating piece inserted in the tie bars on points?

Tom. Does number 4 normally have a cover or is visble all the time? It's got something to do with signal mains I'm pretty sure. It's normally found sandwiched between some other components. You don't normally see what it looks like unless the whole assembly is dismantled. This is pure guess work on my part but is it an insulating piece inserted in the tie bars on points? No - they're normally a fibre and brown coloured. Agreed- it must be some sort of insulator- on rail-joint fishplates for example? They're normally nylon so no again, sorry! And item No. 2 is a Stone Age Fuse . True, it's an old design. The last one I saw was in a museum, and I've got an alibi for that day, even if he is a hedgehog... But the brand name of the fuse? I'll give a clue, it's Swedish...

Spot on on all of them in photo 5. As pic no.4 seems to be causing everyone to draw a blank, I'll reveal it in a couple of days if no-one reaches the answer.

As it's made of an insulating material I would guess it's baseboard for some sort of terminals. But as to which I dunno!

the only next thing i can think of is where the cable gland goes into the older a.c signal main feed set its the thing the put there to hold it all in place dimensions might give a clue though tom is a fair size or is it quite small

;D.
It's about 3in x 1in, and used with 100v supplies. (So nothing to do with the AC main)

just a wild guess at the picture we cannot work ut is it the insulating piece between the lamp holder and the signal case cant think anywhere else that this piece of equipment would be used in that particular case
