I recently found my Ian Allan London Transport Locomotives and Rolling Stock book from the mid 60s. As well as the 4 car and 2 car sets of Q and R stock, there are listed 3 car and 2 car CP units. I remember being at Ealing Broadway watching R and Q stock trains with 1 x 4 car and 1 x 2 car units being strengthened by the addition of a 2 car unit at the east end. What puzzles me was the 47x3 car and 5x2 car units. I assume that the 3 car units were used as 6 car trains. Were the 2 cars used to strengthen these, or were they run as 5 cars, or were 3 x 2 cars used as a 6 car train?

In peak hours some trains ran as 8 cars.
The cars were shorter so they fitted most platforms but there were some where front and rear doors could not be opened.

I seem to recall reading that the Circle used 5-car formations - presumably 3+2 0/P stock. O/P, Q and R stocks could not interwork.
Q stock was, I understand, entirely made up of 4 car units. R stock was single ended 4 car (east end) and 2-car (west end) units, running as 6 or 8 car trains (with one or two 2-car units).
When the District went over to 7-car trains, the 4 car R stock sets were reformed into 3- and 5- car sets, so that a 7 car trains could be 5+2 or 3+2+2. Some CO/CP stock was formed as 3+2+2.

The CP stock I was referring to were listed as District stock. There are also 79x3 car units listed for Hammersmith and Circle but no 2 car. At one time the 2 car units did operate on the Hammersmith and Circle, but by the time of my book it appears that they only operated on the District Line. At the time of my book the Q stock was formed into 4 car units with a driving cab each end and two car units with cab at east end only. So the usual formation was a 4 car unit at the west end and a 2 car or 2x2car units at the east end. The R stock was similar with a 4 car unit at the west end although each set had a driving cab only at the west end, the east car being an uncoupling non-driving motor. So when coupled to the undm of the 2 car unit there were only 2 cabs per train, or of course, 3 in an 8 car train. This meant that it would be possible to operate a 4 car Q stock train but it was not possible with R stock.

R stock was single ended 4 car (east end) and 2-car (west end) units, running as 6 or 8 car trains (with one or two 2-car units). Slight correction, 2-car R Stock units faced east. Prior to C Stock being used on the Edgware Rd service it was restricted to 5 or 6-car CO/CPs. Even in the early '80s 6-car CO/CPs were often supplied for the main-line service, when a 7-car wasn't available.

It wasn't unknown for a 5-car R Stock to operate the District Circles on Sundays, although very rare (6-car R and 6-car Q also could and did work the Circle).
The District's allocation of CP Stock in the 1960s was quite small until the main transfer of the CO/CP from the C&H in 1970-71.
For example, 10/9/62 4x6CP, 17/6/63 7x6CP, 12/10/64 12x6CP, 17/10/66 2x8CP and 12x6CP, 14/10/68 5x8CP and 12x6CP.
It also wasn't unheard of to substitute other stock if need be. For example, from 12/10/64 the only Q8s scheduled were rush hours only, but in reality Q6s were used probably right up to (or close to) the end.

I seem to recall that when I started in the 70s there was a restriction on allowable CO/CP train formations because some formations had too much Train Line progation delay, affecting the emergency brake performance. Caused by tortuous air paths through the autocouplers I think. I don't recall which formations were forbidden but I expect 2 car at the front wouldn't be too clever.

Interesting to know that some formations may have been frowned upon. A former member on here long ago told a story about how he was once given an 8car CP made of 4x2car units. Apparently it went like a rocket - the question becomes whether it stopped as well as it went!

When the District formations were changed 1970/71, a 7-car CO/CP would have to have two two-car units in it as well as a three. Care also had to be taken that on a 7-car train, a CO motor car was not at the outer ends, as the guard was in the cab and platform sighting could be problematical!

I seem to recall working a six car rocket back from Barking one night it did move and we were held at most regulating points.

Ah, perhaps that brake performance restriction would have been to not have two 2 car units at one end, but formed as 2 car - 3 car - 2 car, but that doesn't solve the guard in the cabs issue. Were the CO's made into 3 cars?

There was a mix of everything -
3-car units CO-CO, CO-CP, CP-CO, CP-CP.
2-car units CO-CP, CP-CO.

Another correction, Q stock was "car"stock and not run in fixed rakes. Yes, they ran as 4 car and 2 car units, but each car could be uncoupled. The stock was, like the rest of the stock, "handed" east/west. There were no air pipes or electrical connections on the west end driving motors of Q stock. C/O/P and R stock was handed, but was in fixed formations. Stock "could" and has been run the wrong way round, but because the couplings were handed, they could not couple if the unit was wrong way round. R stock had Ward couplings on the west end driving cars and no air pipes or electrical connections.
Coupling and uncoupling was generally done away with in 1971/72 when the DR went over to 7 car working. I worked on the DR 1970-73. I don't recall any 5 car trains running then though there was a 7 car ran to edgware Road on the first Saturday of the new timetable! It tipped out at High Street. the platform at Bayswater was barely long enough for 6 cars, let alone 7 or 8.
I was not aware of any brake problems with 4x2 car COP formations. Yes, CO cars were not to be run on the outer ends of 7 car trains.
The only time I worked an R stock the "wrong way round" was on a very hor summer Sunday, there were several cable fires and to get the service running, we were diverted round the top of the Circle and back round to Earls Court. By that time the train was the wrong way round, so we have a bonus empty trip to get the stock facing the right way!

In my book, the Q stock 4 car units are listed as Semi-permanent Unit Formations.

R stock could not run as 5 car trains pre-1971. It was fixed formation 4 car and 2 car sets. Unless the works took one of the non-driving cars out of a set, highly unlikely, and yes, Q stock was usually left coupled as 4 and 2 car sets, but was strictly speaking "car" stock and not "unit" stock.
CO stock was not allowed on the outer ends of 8 car sets as the guard would be in the tunnel at certain places.

In my book, the Q stock 4 car units are listed as Semi-permanent Unit Formations. I think when your book was published the Q stock had begun withdrawal and towards the end fixed formations where used despite being the last car stock. I seem to recall reading that the plan was to convert the 2 car P stock units to 3 car CP stock units by using Q38 trailers after transfer from the Met to District and that the district should only use 6 car CP stock and R and Q stock would be strengthened to 8 cars at the peaks. Some 2 car units escaped however. Don't forget that the CP stock also had a few stints on the East London Line where 4 and 5 car formations were used including 6 cars which were not popular!!

Between 1959 and 1964, 25 Q38 trailers were converted to COP trailers. The job was in three stages - 17 in 1959-60 for the Circle Line lengthening programme, one in 1962 and the remainder in 1964.
