Don't mean to be cheeky Q8, but is the answer an electric sub-station that's next to a signal?

Being as that spoilsport Colin has b*ggered my fun lets see who can fathom this? You have all heard the expression "ringing the bell" but who knows what "belling the ring" is? (No it AIN'T rude, clever clogs) Not strictly underground but definitely railways.

As no-one seems to know the answer for "belling the ring" I will enlighten you. In the days of steam and before all the high tech wazzlmedoodahs of today they had men called "wheel tappers" (Now you've all heard of THEM surely?) As they tapped each wheel tyre with the hammer it would give a definite "ring" and that told them that the tyre was OK. If they got a "clank" the tyre was dud so the train or vehicle was stopped.
The tyre was the "ring" and the tapping was the "Belling"

(now - showing MY age!!) I remember watching the Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club on Sat nights on TV - the guy who used to do the dodgy microphone act (Colin Crompton?) is still working on the District ;D ;D If this post doesn't make sense to you - ask your father (hopefully not your grandfather ;D ;D ;D)
