In the past month or two I've noticed that some of my central line services are able to selectively open doors. It's usually done after the doors close the first time round at a station, as though something was caught between them, but only some of the doors open (usually the end doors). Is this intentional or is it the 92 stock having a mind of its own again?

Yes. Actually its selective re-open. If a door closed visual is not obtained, the driver can press the re-open buttons which will only open the door(s) which were not fully closed.

This feature has been available since the stock's introduction in 1993. I believe it was the first stock to have this facility.

Pedantically, selective re-open will re-open all the doors on the side concerned on the car or cars where the doors are not proved closed.

Moving only slightly off thread, i.e. off the Central line, the S stock selective re-open really does act only on individual doorways on the side concerned not proved closed. I'm sure someone on here can tell us whether 09TS on the Vic line has this enhancement. Or indeed whether it has proved to be an enhancement!

It is very rarely used, opening one set of doors on a train just encourages a rush to those doors and can cause more delay than opening them all.

Selective Re-open seems to be provided mainly because it's been thought it could be a good idea and now it's enshrined in tech standards, rather than fulfilling a real need.

Annoyingly on the Northern Line the other day, I was walking down the platform and could see 4, 3 and 2 were all rammed, so I carried on walking towards 1, as is my way. Got to 1, and it was almost empty. The doors on 3 reopened due to wally-blocking, but no other doors reopened. Would have got a seat if the doors on 1 had reopened as well. I know it rarely happens this way.

On the Northen line the selective re open is a god send!! especially on friday and saturday nights and some wally has got on with a massive bag!
