Northernmost is indeed Helsinki, at 60.5 degrees north. The northernmost metro in the former Soviet Union is St. Petersburg, a few degrees south of Helsinki.
The southernmost one, at about 35 degrees south, is Buenos Aires, in Argentina. This is also the oldest metro in South America -it opened in 1913. The closest competitor is Santiago in Chile, fittingly enough, inaugurated in 1968, and built as a rubber-tyred metro in the french style.

What would he like? A week in China to see the Great wall? Or a trip to the "GOOD OLD U.S OF A" including an indefinite stay at the Cuban holiday camp?

Considering the expansion plans of the Shanghai Metro (80 km today, 200 km by 2008 and 810 km for 2020), a visit there might be very interesting indeed. And the food is probably better, too, so I think I'll settle for the China trip.

810 km is the planned total route length. But yes, that is a very large metro system -although it will at least partly be more on the lines of commuter trains running. underground than a traditional tube-style metro. There are some very extensive and interesting projects being started up in various parts of asia right now -new and expanded metro systems in Shenzhen, Guangdong, Shanghai, Beijing and other chinese cities, major rebuildings and extensions in Mumbai, a huge integrated metro/commuter train network for Teheran, and so on. Likewise, there are several interesting developments afoot in north africa -for example, the Libyans are committed to rebuilding the coastal railway and linking up to Tunisia and Egypt, with extensive goods flows (iron ore, phosphates, cement) and commuter train nets around the big cities in the mediterranean strip being planned. Several of these projects will more or less dwarf the old western metro systems if and when they are finished. So, I suppose a good way of getting a job in the railway business would be to learn a chinese dialect, farsi or arabic. Jim, if you take care of the chinese, i'll try my hand at the arabic, we kidnap Tom, and then we can start a consultancy! /al-Gamfouz
