Very. They started out as two 4-car trains. 12 dead. Very sad news indeed.

Horrible new, RIP.
I must admit that seeing incidents like this makes me glad that the UK railway takes safety as seriously as it does and that it has been almost 10 years since the last fatal mainline incident.

One of the facts everyone who works on the railways should be proud of. Interesting, another head on on a single track. Wasn't the last one in Germany?

Two carriages from the set involved at Grayrigg are now parked behind the Virgin Trains Talent Academy in Crewe. They are the only railway vehicles that Virgin Rail Group actually own (everything else is leased).

Sadly when something like this happenes in the investigation they usually find that someone somewhere is responsible with signalls incorrectly installed or the safety systems were functioning but were over ridden. Lets hope they have something similar to the RAIB that produces a detailed report and reccomendations so they whole system can improve.

Shocking news indeed, and condolences to those who have lost loved ones. We are happy to leave this thread open as long as there isn't speculation over the cause. Although it's not a London Underground incident, we apply the same rules. Thanks.

Italy has the Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza delle Ferrovie (National Railway Safety Agency). However the English index to their website is broken and my Italian is barely more than non-existent so I cannot say how comprehensive their reports are.

I used to live in Bari and have used this line several times, so very sad news. As well as the main railway system Italy still has lots of minor local networks. This, for example, is one of three independent companies operating from their own stations in Bari. They have a pre-Beeching, or even Colonel Stephens charm, but I'm sure there must be great practical challenges involved in running such systems

The death toll is sadly increasing.

31 was the last headline figure I saw. I have an english friend in Italy, if I can find his email address I'll ask him for further details.

How awful. Having seen what has survived I'm stunned to read that they were both four car trains.
A side story which won't make the press is that one of my nephews is currently Inter-Railing around Europe and the first thing we thought on hearing about this crash was his whereabouts. We've subsequently learnt that he was in Austria at the time, however for a while there were some anxious moments in our household.

Simon Judging from the footage I've seen, that line would appeal to the traveller wanting to see more of rural Italy. It's so beautiful there. Glad they are OK.

Yes. What a bizarre system for single line working.

According to that article the phone despatch system was introduced in the 1960s. In the UK, tablets and train staffs were introduced in the 1880s, and were deemed inadequate without interlocking after Abermule in 1921.
