Hi, I was looking at this site that has the whole of LU tracks mapped out. I looked at Northolt and there is a crossover at the southern end of the station.
Why do they need this? I know that trains terminate there but why do they need the crossover when there is a siding?
Thanks, Daniel

The emergency crossover is at the east end of the station and the siding at the west end (the Central, for the most part, is an east-west railway). Access to the siding is from either platform and access from the siding can be to either platform. However, to reverse (say, a defective train, back to Ruislip depot) east to west, it would involve a double shunt with the crew having to change ends three times (in the EB platform, in the siding and in the WB platform). A defective train has often been reversed east to west via the crossover east of the station - it is usually the preferred option and the crew has to change ends only once.

The crossover has also come in very handy in the past when there has been a signal failure just past Northolt westbound

It was used yesterday, too, when a dud train, having left West Ruislip, stalled. It was eventually got moving to Northolt and was reversed east to west via the crossover to get it back to Ruislip depot.

also the crossover is used for late running, theres been a few times iv been running late and instead of going into the sidings, you turn around on the platform and use the crossover, it does cause confusion at times.

During the big freeze we had years ago i remember my train left West Ruislip with a frozen door on the right side we got to South Ruislip fine, when the doors closed the train locking did not work the driver came down the train and found the door he managed to get the door to lock proper we then made our way to Northolt and we got kicked off and the train was taken via the crossover back to Ruislip depot.

There is also a crossover west of Liv St too. This also has a siding. Two in fact. But the x over is rarely used.

It's quite useful for reversing late running West Ruislip trains. Remember that the siding is scheduled to be used throughout the day by timetabled reversers, so isn't always available for non scheduled reversers.
