Sadiq Khan has announced the proposed appointment of Val Shawcross as Deputy Mayor of Transport. The appointment is subject to a confirmation hearing by the London Assembly.
As Val has been involved in transport matters on the Assembly for 16 years so knows her onions. It's a far better appointment in my view than the proposed use of Lord Adonis. He will chair CR2 but remain with the National Infrastructure Commission. Val at least understands the issues affecting all the modes from cycling to car drivers to buses to rail. Hopefully we will see some sense on transport matters including on the bus network which Val does understand. I suspect some people in TfL will be feeling a tad nervous today - it's not going to be easy to hoodwink Val with a load of old codswallop.

Given the composition of the assembly I think it unlikely that she wont be confirmed.

Given the composition of the assembly I think it unlikely that she wont be confirmed. I agree. I think even the Tory members will struggle to be churlish about her appointment given several of them have worked alongside her for years. Despite the usual "party politics" I've always had a sense that the Assembly Members do respect each other.
