Hi all,
Never had this before: upon arriving at Leyton e/b at circa 1940 today, our train announced that for Hainault / Newbury Park to change at at Leyton, because we (a Loughton train) would be calling at platform 2 at Leytonstone and onwards up towards Epping.
Sure enough we did a rare (to me at least) rusty rail move into platform two at LES and then back onto the usual e//b line east of LES.
There wasn't a train - defective or otherwise - in the usual e/b platform at LES, so I was wondering what prompted this cheeky little detour.
Certainly made my journey home more interesting!
Thanks!
Jim.

This was due to points failure at leytonstone, the points were unable to give the route towards hainault, so the points had to be scotch and clipped to give the hainault route, thus unable to give an Epping route. So trains towards Epping were diverted through the middle where an Epping route can be given. Hope this helps

Not a good night tonight then! Same deal as before (Hainault from 3; Epping from 2?). Coupled with the the western suspension it's not a good night for the red line.
Not forewarned this time so I opted for the tube to Wanstead and then a cab. Drivers only advising of the Epping service from the centre platform upon arrival at Leytonstone, so guessing this setup was maybe not as 'permamant' as this diversionary route was last time?

possibly running a shuttle service from les to epp, not sure as i was off that day. Just to help out trains to hai can only be directed from platform 3, whereas trains to epp can be directed from either 2 or 3. Recently we've had a bad time on the central line, trains and destinations all over the place, also it dont help with the removal of holborn sidings.

What about westbound trains from platform 3? At its western end there is a signal (LES 5754)and a short distance away there is even a crossover track, so presumably it is possible for trains travelling west (towards Leyton) to depart from this platform (which is normally only used by eastbound trains). If so, is there a 'good' time to see this? Or does it only ever happen at times of service disruption? Below are some photos of the western end of platform 3 and the signal in question/ LeytonstionePlat3-WesternEnd-P1420768Signal-LES5754-Leytonstone-P1420769btw, I ask because I have seen all other possible train movements - except this one. It certainly is possible. There used to be a bit of a problem whereby the images displayed in the cab on the CCTV monitors were actually of platform 2, not platform 3, when at the western end of the train getting ready to depart and carry out this move ( aslefshrugged.blogspot.co.uk/2010/12/on-saturday-it-snowed.html). That was ever such a long time ago though, you'd hope it had all been fixed by now! If so, is there a 'good' time to see this? Or does it only ever happen at times of service disruption? Unless I'm sorely mistaken it's not a timetabled move. I've never seen it, but it does happen. Besides luck of the dice maybe some weekend engineering works will use it?

Definitely not a timetabled move in the current timetable. Most Leytonstone terminators (ususually late runners) reverse in platform 2 as it doesn’t disrupt the through eastbound service. I’ve only ever seen one train in 20 years reverse in platform 3!
An even rarer move is for trains to terminate in platform 3 then shunt east of the station back onto the westbound. Years ago, there were scheduled trains that did this move and with the much sparser off peak services back then, it didn’t really affect the through services.

Bit off-topic, but it's funny I photographed that very signal this evening as the sun set - there was the most incredible orange-yellow streak across the sky, I can't remember ever seeing quite that colour.

Was it, though, possible to go westbound off of platform 3 in passenger service in those days. I know that under the old signalling the wrong road signal at the western end of platform 3 was a shunt signal (LF41) and I don't think there was a colour light signal. Was the mainline shunt move still in scheduled use after a colour light signal was put in or not? It's also worth remembering that there was no access to platform 2 from Leyton until relatively recently. I know that the crossover was put in and the signalling altered to permit it before the introduction of ATP and the new signalling etc. but even as late as the late 1980s there was no access to platform 2.

Hmmm, you’re testing my memory now! You are definitely right in that there was no passenger move westbound off platform 3. However, I’m sure I remember trains from central London terminating in platform 2 before the 90’s resignalling. Maybe Harsig or @reganorak could clarify (or even someone else!)

During the 80's when I was train side on the Central, there were scheduled late night Saturday + all day Sunday White City - Leytonstone (rev pl.2) trips...plus a few "under the Cabin" reveresers as mentioned. Via 37 points.....had forgotten (shown on the diagram). When I left the trains and went into the cabins,(talking early '90s here) Leytonstone went to an NX panel replacing the lever frame as the new Westinghouse signalling progressed eastwards.

Oooooh that's really interesting. This album on flickr shows Leytonstone cabin as it was in April 1987 with no crossover from the eastbound main to platform number 2. They Video125 Driver's Eye View film shot in 1992 does show the crossover and altered signalling.

However the area was not resugnsllec until 1993 / 1994 because I remember the 1992 stock being in service with the old signals still in use.

April 1997 I believe the new signalling and local control stage was commissioned. So that was when the lever frame was taken out of commission and the local control panel was brought into use controlling the area.

I’m sure you’re right but they had replaced the old signal posts a bit before then.

I feel sure that (many years ago) I saw trains terminate here and then switch to the westbound to the east of the station. This probably was in the days of the Leytonstone - White City service. In those days the westbound track rejoined the main line almost immediately after platform 1 and then there was a siding alongside the main line. Occasionally I even saw a train in that siding. re: access to platform 2 from Leyton, a few times I've seen trains doing this and been on trains which also did this. At least once the train driver told passengers wanting the route via Wanstead that we should alight at Leyton (rather than Leytonstone) for one of these trains, but 'rare track' explains why I stayed on the train that was routed into platform two.
