This question has probably been asked before, though I can't find anything using the search function, the DMC's have numbering sequences from 3231 to 3267 and 3531 to 3567 with, for some obvious reason, 3299 added. The first batch, however, has 3249 & 3257 missing and the second has 3539 missing.
Now for the questions, what happened to the missing cars and what is the reason behind 3299's out of sequence numbering?
Anybody got any ideas, please?

3299 is a non-standard formatiom, reformed with a undm instead of the usual dm in the middle position of the unit. It was renumbered to highlight its anomalous situation. (I don't recall its original number, but doutless it is one of those missing from the sequence). the other absentees were withdrawn from service at some time in the past.

3539 was scrapped, along with 4539, after a collision at Harrow and Wealdstone on the 29th of March 1994. 3249 and 4249 were also scrapped after a collision at Piccadilly Circus on the 22nd of April 1994.
3299-4299-4399-3399 is therefore a unique unit as the 33xx car is an UNDM instead of a DM. The unit is in fact made of 3357-4357-4257,which lost its DM 3257 in a derailment at Piccadilly Circus on the 3rd of December 1996. The remaining 3 cars where "turned", and along with a spare UNDM 3439, was made into a 4 car unit and then renumbered.

Many thanks for the very detailed replies, phoenixcronin and norbitonflyer, this forum really is a mine of information from some very knowledgeable people who always seem happy to oblige with the answers.
Thanks, gents. Richard M.

To clarify, both "batches" are mark 2 stock, built at the same time but are formed into different units. Mark 1 stock is numbered in the same sequences, starting at 3x01 The 32xx and 33xx DMs (and 42xx and 43xx trailers) are formed in four car units. The 35xx DMs and 34xx UNDMs (and 45xx trailers) are formed as single-ended three car sets. The Undm can couple to either end of a four car set but this capability has not been used since they left the northern line. 3299 is a single-ended four car set with a undm where one of the DMs would normally be. It is capable of coupling to other UNDMs. 3539 was scrapped, along with 4539, 3249 and 4249 were also scrapped . 3299-4299-4399-3399 is unique as the 33xx car is an UNDM instead of a DM. The unit is in fact made of 3357-4357-4257,which lost its DM 3257 The remaining 3 cars where "turned", and along with a spare UNDM 3439, was made into a 4 car unit and then renumbered. So that accounts for 3439/3539, 3249 and 3257/3357, with the orphaned 3439 replacing 3257. But what happened to 3349 and 4349?

3349-4349 are now 3366-4366. They replaced cars 3224-4224 which were damaged in a collision at Morden Depot. 3224-4224 were part of one of the three refurbished Mk1 trains on the Northern line. The remaining cars from the unit were 'turned' and renumbered from 3324-4324 to 3266-4266, with the unit transferring to the Bakerloo line once reformed.
