This is a British Rail question, but some people on here may know as it's along the Metropolitan line. What trains ran on Chiltern before the Networker Turbos replaced them in the 1990s? I know roughly, class 121s and the like, but more specifically, which units went to where? Was there much loco haulage? Also I did see a photo of a Thumper in NSE livery at Harrow, but was that a one-off or did Thumpers operate the route? I think the trains from Harrow to Marylebone, had compartments and no corridor connection? or did I remember wrongly? What type of train is it likely that I took?

Actually, they were cl.115. 41 sets were originally allocated to Marylebone services. These were non-gangwayed, semi open saloons. Not individual compartments as such, but half-car length compartments. Towards the end of 115 operation, older & more varied classes- 101, 110 came onto the Chiltern to help out. Locomotive haulage was really restricted to Marylebone via High Wycombe to Banbury services.

I really cannot add much more to that answer except to say that the 115s ran as 4-car sets, usually coupled in pairs in the peaks and had the more powerful 230hp engines, which made 920 hp for a 4-car. Oh, and we still have 4 useable power cars on the WSR (although not in daily use)

I seem to remember hearing a long time ago from someone (Harsig?) that 47+Mk2 rakes, equipped with tripcocks on the locos, were rostered as extras on the Met services to Aylesbury.

Thanks for the info! When did they get replaced, and did it take long?
Are there any Class 115s still in existence?

I Can't remember the year but I can remember going with Hertfordshire Railtours to Watford for a Steam on the Met event using 2 Thumpers. On arrival at Watford the train was split and whilst one unit was stabled at Watford for most of the day, the other unit did a run through to Chesham and operated the Chesham shuttle until it ran back through to Watford before departing for Southern metal's. Hope this is of some use to you. Somewhere amongst all my bits & bobs I'm sure I have some photo's and a small booklet which was produced by the tour company.

I've had a sort through and found some info on my previous posting. The Pinner Pieman railtour ran using 2 "Thumpers" (205033 & 205009) on 20 May 1995 from Waterloo to Watford.

Can't remember when the first Turbo ran but they made their debut on the Chiltern some time in 1991. I believe that delivery of the Turbo's was completed sometime in 1992 with the last 115 running on a Marylebone to Aylesbury service sometime I think in the summer of 1992.
I might be wrong but I seem to remember that the 47 and a rake of Mk II's were used on 2 peak trains, a morning peak from Banbury to Paddington via High Wycombe returning in the evening peak.

During a recent clear out of my house I have found some old newsletters which was produced during the period of changeover from Class 115 to Turbo's. The last 115 did indeed run as I stated above in the summer of 1992. The last 115's were on Wednesday 29th July 1992 and were the 1911 Marylebone to Aylesbury Via Amersham and the return working 2045 Aylesbury to Marylebone also via Amersham I believe.
