not unexpected, not long enough for the new trains.

Still a shame. Could they not have extended it at the other end?
I suppose this also means that the former trackbed will become a large strip of waste land which will become an eyesore.

It could be that the former trackbed becomes a station garden, as at Chesham. It will partly depend on whether it is still classed as being track for staff access purposes - I have no idea how that is determined. The most likely thing though is that it will become home to signalling cabinets that are extremely difficult and expensive to move in the future.

There is a solid wall at the east end of the platform and a crossover at the west end so extending the platform is not an option.

now closed, track is still there (and shiny, from recent use) but blocked off with a sleeper chained to the track and the overhead wiring has been removed.

All rush hour trains now stop at either Manor Park, Forest Gate or Maryland en route into Liverpool Street

To commemorate the closure here is a photo I took a long time ago. Unidentified InterCity train at either platform 1 or 2, Class 306 EMU at platform 4 and unknown DMU at platform 5. This was filmed circa the early 1980's on a Sunday when BR was changing over the power supply from 6.25kV to 25kV and only diesel powered trains could travel between London Liverpool Street station and Ilford station. Interesting picture. The DMs is a cravens-built unit, class 105 (many of Stratford's allocation were originally classified 106). It is coupled to a 3car set, probably a 116 as the lea valley sets (class 125) were not compatible with other types. The mark 1 carriage glimpsed on platform 1 could be part of a locp-hauled set, but it could be a class 309 Clacton electric unit.

As I passed through Ilford today, I tried to look for evidence of the old lifts.... but DOH.... being 35ish years ago, the platforms have been resurfaced and all obvious evidence is long gone.
Elsewhere on the line, work to update the station stairwells and building structures are ongoing at Harold Wood and Forest Gate. The platform extension work is also ongoing throughout the line to Shenfield.

the old locations are near the covered area which had bridge there which is no longer - you can compare with 2002 on wiki - the 2nd lift was there where shelter on 2002 photo
so i am not sure where new lifts would go in - i think they replacing stairs and etc with newer stairs and lift - replacing slow stairlifts in proper vertical lifts

The new lifts are going where the second staircase is on platform 2&3 and by end of what was platform 5

It was myself and my old man who removed the points that led into Platform 5. I never realised how heavy tubular stretchers were!
