Very sad news, thoughts with his family. His wife is the voice behind the announcements on a lot of platforms - "Northern line - the train now approaching is to ... Edgware. Please stand back from the platform edge" - those ones.

Whilst he did pre-record the announcements made at many railway stations, was the late Phil Sawyer the man whose voice is famous for the "Mind The Gap" message? I wonder whether there could be some confusion with the late Oswald Laurence who died in 2007? This link is about the late Mr Laurence. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-21719848Whiilst I have no proof I suspect that the first voice heard in this film (at Embankment station) is that of Mr Laurence. Maybe though one of the voices heard at Bank station in 2013 was Mr Sawyer? Simon

There seems to be a bit of confusion among people, many will recognize that Phil Sayer made announcements for Rail Stations. However, for London Underground, his involvement was relatively recent compared to other voice over artists such as Peter Lodge and Oswald Laurence who both voiced the famous 'Mind - The Gap' Sawyer's work was more recent in that he voiced the 'Mind the Gap Please' announcement as per Simon's video and The Gap announcement on the S Stock.

I'm with slugabed here-it is definitely Peter Lodge on Northern Line Embankment on Simon's vid. That exact voice/intonation/timbre was around from about 1968 into the early 70's, when going through Northern Line & Bakerloo stations most Saturdays when I would usually be heading to a match somewhere in London in Div 1, or, from around 1974 onwards, going from Charing X to Euston for Utd. home games, so it's part of the music of my adolescence/early adulthood. And Peter Lodge was first on the scene here.

So are we saying that she doesn't know what her husband's voice sounds like? And that TFL are wrong? I think we need some clarification here!

So are we saying that she doesn't know what her husband's voice sounds like? And that TFL are wrong? I think we need some clarification here! The first voice on Simon's vid comes from 1990, according to the end credits, so it may be it was changed to her husband's voice after then. He died in 2007, so would still have been possible for her to've heard HHV at Embankment for at least a decade before he died, let alone the six years afterwards before she went to TfL, without that 1990 voice still being Mr Lodge. TfL wasn't formed until 2000, so that might account for them being wrong. And if I remember, the original Lodge recording, in the days of cassettes, had a hell of a lot of static on it, which may be another reason it was replaced. It ended up sounding like Mwihnbd Thurgh Gwarrap or a similar S4CW soap opera.

Listen to the two recordings. The Oswald in Superteacher's video and the first one in Simon's,and you will see that they are different. The Oswald has a rising intonation in "Gap" whereas Peter Lodge's is shorter, level and more clipped. Peter Lodge was a pioneer in digital recording techniques, and his were (I think) the first public digital recordings from 1968.

Just to remove any doubt. Peter Lodge: Oswald Laurence: Credit goes to SquareWheels and ews66199 The bottom one is different to any of the others that we have heard so far. That recording was never in use at Embankment, so still none the wiser.
