To keep it short, the past few months, Ive noticed that there is intense arcing that occurs at the small gap in the conductor rail next to signal A8400. Any ideas whats causing it to discharge so violently so often? Problems with the rail? Or would it be problems with the section supply? Or something else? Thanks

The conductor rail probably wants packing slightly to bring it higher so the shoe don't arc as much on the ramp

As this is in a Station, is it linked to trains drawing current when accelerating from a stand or vice versa?

As this is in a Station, is it linked to trains drawing current when accelerating from a stand or vice versa? Sorry to revive a dead thread, but to answer your question, it, still, is due to trains passing the rail gap at A8400, which causes unusually blindingly bright arcing when a shoe passes over the short rail gap, apparently, indiscriminant of amount of traction drawn. I guess the height of the rail affects the arcing, what do you think. Ill have a look the next time I go to Cannon Street, see what I notice (the scientific method, woo!)

Pleased to say the restoration of BEA coach MLL738 is as complete as it can be, now restoring MLL721

There was an instance of intermittent arcing in that area back in the early 1970's, sometimes blowing the circuit breakers out. The cause was found to be the head of an elderly lady who had inadvertantly fallen between the cars (no safety barriers in those days) and her head was laying between the positive rail and the running rail.

As this thread hasn't been locked or deleted, I'll make a comment, here. This sounds very much like an urban legend, for several reasons, including: 1) Didn't anyone notice a headless body? 2) Why would a a fairly high resistance item, like a head, cause arcing? 3) How do you get a relatively low voltage such as LU use to arc without breaking a high current circuit. I'm not going to go into detail about all the gruesome things that would happen if a head was passing enough current to trip circuit breakers - suffice to say that it would be pretty visible (given that people seemed to notice the arcing) and generate quite a smell It seems so unlikely that it could just be true!

As a general rule and for future reference, threads are locked after 6 months of inactivity. Even then, they can be unlocked for response subsequent to this by request to an admin or mod.

Erm, yes, I was alluding to the subject matter of the post to which I referred. Whilst not about a one under the situation had similar characteristics. I was just pointing out that I had waited to see if there would be any moderator action before replying.

My apologies. I overlooked the post that said "sorry to resurrect a dead thread", so didn't realise that my saying it wasn't locked looked as if it was a query/criticism or some-such. As I said, I was purely pointing out that I was unsure that the topic of the post to which I responded was acceptable.

We do try and keep things up to date and will always remove or lock anything contentious in that respect regardless of age. Prior to your post, 'zcap' was apologizing for resurrecting what he thought was a "dead thread" which he didn't really need to do. Just to reiterate, all threads are considered live unless we lock them whether for timed-out reasons or otherwise.

EDIT: I've locked this as it's heading nowhere apart from grief.
