Three adults and three children are going from Luton Airport to St. Pancras on the 20th of March, returning on the 23rd.
We plan to catch the shuttle bus between the airport and Luton Airport Parkway Station in order to catch the train leaving the station at 13:33. On our way home, we plan to catch the train departing St. Pancras at 14:34, getting off at Luton Airport Parkway Station continuing with the shuttle bus for the airport.
According to Thameslink's website, this will cost us £93.30, and since the tickets are issued for Luton Airport and not Luton Airport Parkway, the shuttle bus is included. However, if I search for the exact same trains with Luton Airport Parkway, they will cost £54.45. This is a £39.15, and buying bus tickets separately is only £13.15.
I find it quite hard to believe that you can save £5.78 per adult (saying two children equals one adult) by doing this. Have I missed anything, or is this just Luton's way of fooling tourists, just like the Gatwick Airport Express?

That is odd. There appears to be a group save arrangement on Thameslink which isn't shown correctly on the NR website. On the national rail website, for those exact trains, I can't see those fares to Parkway, although you can get close if you use a Family Railcard for two of the adults and the three children. (It might be cheaper to use a two together card for two of the adults and a F&F card for the children and the third adult). But of course you have to pay for the railcards as well. And if you have a railcard, the inclusive fares to the airport are cheaper too
without any railcards, the fares are shown as Adult super off peak single LTN to STP £6.60 Child super off peak single LTN to StP £2 Adult anytime single StP to LTN £9.25 Child anytime single StP to LTN £7
Multiply all those numbers by 3 and we get a total of £74.55
Thameslink shows a Groupsave return fare of £16.15 adult and £2 child
To LUA the cheapest is indeed off peak returns at £13.50 (child) and £17.80 (adult) - total £93.90

If their website has got it all wrong, then it is hopefully their problem. I have found yet another oddity. When you search Thameslink tickets just between Luton Airport Parkway and Luton Airport, the site says it will cost £3.00 for a return adult, whereas the Luton Airport website says it will be just £2.80.

I trust Thameslink the most. That's not something you hear every day, but I think in this case you're probably right! presumably the discrepancy is because Group save isn't available for the through tickets. "Split ticketing" is a common fact of life in today's national rail network.
