Out and about today, I noticed a number of purple cabinets at the trackside, on the Central line as well as the District line. For instance, I recall seeing one at Leytonstone.
I've never noticed these before and I was wondering if anybody could tell me what they're for?

Possibly something to do with CCTV as I think purple signifies TV or something similar.

Well that rules out graffiti 'artists' who are West Ham supporters

Some rather large blue boxes have started appearing on the Victoria Line, holding clips and scotches, with a glass cover (*) to ensure the contents are visible from the outside. This could well be what they are. (* So they can be inspected easily to ensure p-way haven't removed them and not bothered to put them back, which was a major issue with the old boxes, go to secure points in a failure and find the box empty).

I think this might very well be what they are, thanks both I thought they looked purple, but I merely caught glimpses as we sailed by, so that might be all there was to it. I'll try and get a picture to confirm on Monday.

Almost sorry to hear they are blue & not purple.
The thread title would've been perfect for a 1970's Prog Rock album-probably a double LP, too.

What is scotch in this case? Scotching and clipping - securing points to stop them from moving.

Why is it called scotching?

What is scotch in this case? A piece of shaped wood, with a handle, inserted into the open end of points to prevent them moving. Must be used with a clip, a vice-like device which holds the closed end of points together.

Also the glass covers ensure that vandals can break them.! And if they're electrocuted at the same time, I'll pay for the new glass As much as we have little sympathy for vandals who get hurt whilst doing what they do, I don't feel it's appropriate on this forum to celebrate or glorify in somebody's death, criminal or otherwise. And as we have established the purpose of the cabinets, it's time to lock this one.
EDIT: Since locking, Norbitonflyer has asked me to include the following, which is relevant to the thread:
Why is it called scotching? To "scotch" is to block or hinder,
etymology is from an old French word eschocher, to wound or cut, from which we also get the word "score"
as in "we have scotched the snake, not killed it " (Macbeth) - but no other connection with our friends north of the border.

I've unlocked this thread as I managed to take a couple of pics today of the blue boxes: one on the eastbound District at Gloucester Road, looking west towards the convergence of the lines from Earl's Court and High St Ken. The second photo is at Victoria southbound before the sidings: it's blurry as the mass of commuters behind me meant I couldn't stop. No further addition relating to people's demises is required if the thread is to stay unlocked.

Well they are tools that you would need to secure a set of points.
Interesting that the clip is already missing from the Victoria box, was it in use (if so why not the scotch too) or had it gone walkies?

Not bad for nearly £1000 a box Surely that's the design, build and install costs, not just the purchase price per box?

Not bad for nearly £1000 a box Surely that's the design, build and install costs, not just the purchase price per box? Does seem excessive. When I was a designer, an IP65 rated vandal resistant backbox with window and lockable door, usually for an external fire alarm repeater panel, would be less than £200:00. The boxes look to be of a standard size. If they are 'nearly a £1000' does that include all the equipment inside as well, and installation? <<rincew1nd: typo corrected with strikethrough, subsequent corrective post deleted>>
