For those who haven't heard about it, Michael Portillo's next series - Great American Railroad Journeys is on BBC One at the moment. Starting in NYC it shows the fabulous Grand Central Station and the subway system before going outside Manhattan and finishing at Niagra Falls.

Later this year I'm going from NYC to Washington DC by train and, after flying to the other coast, taking the train with a glass roof (the Coast Starlight) from San Fran to Vancouver, taking 36 hours.

The Grauniad talked about it here and I booked it as soon as I could. Can't wait

I gather about as many people travel on Amtrak all year as use Stratford station!
