I don't actually recall this happening but very interesting to see what can happen if you get simultaneous electrical shorts.

I remember the Report being quite scathing about the warning alarms being suppressed; the Unions calling for the postponement of impending OPO and everyone quite thankful it was at the rear of a crew operated train, rather than in the middle of an OPO train.
Traction current feeding arrangements were altered as a result of this incident.

Traction current feeding arrangements were altered as a result of this incident. I recall from Voluntary Classes at White City one of the instructors saying the worst type of incident to be involved with was arcing coming up through the floor and causing a fire in the middle of a train. I've lived in dread of that happening on a train I'm on. The news clip shows what sort of damage can occur (albeit at the back in this case).

The train was carrying an earth & there was an earth in Cockfosters Depot when this happens the electricity finds the weakest point which happened to be under the train.Needless to say nowadays depots are seperated from the main line supply.BTW saw this phenomenon happen in Golders Green Depot, there was a posi & negi earth in the depot and suddenly a sleeper burst into flames, luckily the road wasn't occupied at the time.

Yes. Allegedly, a tiny amount of car 888 survives to this day. Underground News from the time states DM 888 supplied bodywork to DM 204 which was involved in a buffer-stops collision in Northfields Depot in 1990. In the event unit 204 was never returned to service and was itself scrapped, but not before donating the same bodywork to DM 170 which was involved in a later buffer-stops collision, also in Northfields Depot. I can't confirm this is definitely correct, but it seems plausible.

Just to add a bit more, 888 was replaced by 114 - the whole unit is now 896 (ex-114) - 696 (ex-688) - 897 (ex-889).
114 was converted as a double ender after reformation.

The damage looks nasty! If it was pre OPO was the guard not in the rear cab?!

The damage looks nasty! If it was pre OPO was the guard not in the rear cab?! Yes, as stated in Report the Guard managed to jump over before it took hold.
