Are these generally to be found in the fiction section? Made a journey yesterday (Saturday) to/from Ewell West on the Dorking and Guildford lines, that one day may become part of Crossrail 2. SW Trains timetable folder from Waterloo (December-May) clearly states 4tph on Saturdays. Returning from EWW, only 2tph shown, and ditto on NR website, so very annoying 25 min wait. No apologies, no posters... Anyone know what happened here? Hope CR2 will get it right....

SWT website shows on Engineering Works pages: " Some lines between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction and all lines between Clapham Junction and Barnes will be closed Saturday and Sunday for track renewal work. A limited train service will run in and out of London Waterloo on the lines which remain open. This work will affect train services throughout the South West Trains area and all passengers should check their journey details before travelling. Platforms 3 to 6 at Clapham Junction and a number of platforms at Vauxhall and London Waterloo will be closed.
The following services will be altered as shown below and passengers may need to change trains to complete their journeys. •Trains between London Waterloo and Poole will only run between Winchester and Poole. •Stopping services between London Waterloo and Salisbury will only run between Basingstoke and Salisbury. •Stopping services between London Waterloo and Haslemere will only run between Woking and Haslemere. •Services to Guildford via Cobham will only run between Surbiton and Guildford. Passengers use other train services to and from Surbiton to connect. •There will be no South West Trains service to and from Dorking. Passengers should use Southern train services from Clapham Junction or Epsom. •Chessington line services will only run between Wimbledon and Chessington. •“Kingston Loop” services will be replaced by other altered train services." Posters are usually displayed at all SWT stations.

I just looked on NR enquiries for next Saturday-4 tph both ways, from Waterloo I did 09:00-13:00 departures, EWW 14:00-17:00-and today, which is 2tph both ways, but with a bus service advertised as making up part of most journeys and change necessary on most, next Saturday's being through trains all the way.

Thank you both for this. I saw the bit about no SWT service to Dorking, but, knowing the lines south of the Thames imperfectly, didn't realise that would halve the service to EWW!

South West Trains have a habit of dropping frequencies at weekends due to Engineering Work. The Alton line is supposed to have 2tph on Sunday afternoons, but regularly this is dropped down to 1tph when there is engineering work elsewhere on the SWML. SWT have blamed this on a shortage of train crew to work diverted/altered services and a lack of capacity between Woking and Waterloo if some of the lines are shut. (Our pleas for a 2tph shuttle to Woking to allow connection with other London trains have fallen on deaf ears). However, if you want truly fictional timetables, try travelling on Thameslink, on any day of the week

It really is important to check for engineering work on weekends, forget it at your own peril! With National Rail it also is a good idea to use a journey planner (or the excellent RealTimeTrains site) in case there are unexpected side-effects. In your case it appears only the 2tph Guildford via Epsom were running, and not the 2tph Dorking. Engineering work between Barnes and Waterloo (Windsor Lines) has reduced Hounslow Loop to 2tph instead of 4tph, with only the Weybridge services running and no circulars (out via Brentford, return via Richmond and vice-versa). Probably due to trains reversing at Twickenham taking up platforms and line capacity, but doesn't appear to be clear from the text and only found through journey planners. However, on Sunday there are 1tph running as Barnes to Barnes circulars instead of the usual reversal at Twickenham to go to/from Kingston! (In addition to the 1tph Woking). This service was only introduced from December to give a second tph on the Hounslow Loop in the afternoon and evening (removing a relic that survived from the pre-2004 timetable), but because of the engineering work it has only run normally once, on 20 December, and only because engineering work on Hounslow Loop was cancelled!

Hassaan, yes used the NR journey planner on the way out, but not knowing when I was returning, and not having a handheld with me, couldn't do so for the return. By the crowds on the platforms, it looks like very few other people did, either. There's a big conceptual difference between 2tph, where you are ruled by timetables, and 4tph, where it's more turn up and travel! And among the Tannoys at EWW, I would have expected something like "The 1452 will not run today because of planned engineering works" Nothing so helpful from Stagecoach!
